Hello Robert, No sign of James as a tailor in 1892 Sands & Mc Dougall directory. In 1904 a Frederick Mitchell was listed as a tailor at 96 Bridport St, South Melbourne. Lots of entries for James Mitchell, but none who specify any of them as a tailor. Also under the trade listing for tailors, Fred is listed at Bridport St, but no mention of James. There are two possibilities for both Fred & James in 1929 in their suburbs of residence but no entries for any type of business as I guess they would have been retired by then. Frederick: 16 MacGregor St, East Malvern or 18 Tooronga Rd, East Malvern. James: 374 Danks St, Albert Park or 175 Beaconsfield Parade, Albert Park. best wishes, Jenny Coates Melbourne's Unemployed in the 1890s http://home.primusonline.com.au/jennyc/Melbourne/

USA Hi Karan, Little or nothing would be the answer, and even if he had to show anything, no copies would have been kept. If he married in a church he may have been required to show proof of a baptism, but it wouldn't have been copied. I married in 1984, and I recall showing various documents to prove my identity amd marital status, but I don't recall giving copies, or copies being taken, so in 1912 even less of a chance, given no photocopiers. However, we are cunning little researchers over here, and if you would care to give full details, it wouldn't suprise me if someone could come up with some leads. Just say what has already been checked, and if you have any documents at all - give the full details, starting at the heading on the form, all dates, places, witnesses. Best wishes, Lenore Frost Essendon, Vic

We've a James & Frederick MITCHELL; Tailors of Melbourne. James MITCHELL Emigrated to Australia approx. 1888 from Christchurch, New Zealand Frederick MITCHELL Emigrated to Australia approx. 1895 from Christchurch, New Zealand In both instances; we would imagine that they went straight to Melbourne and shortly thereafter; started their Tailor-shop in Melbourne? At the time of their Deaths; James MITCHELL lived Albert Park, whilst Frederick lived East Malvern at the time of his Death. We would imagine their Tailor-shop to have been in Melbourne CBD, but could have been nearer to where they lived? Is there a list a Tailors for the time period they lived or is there a way of finding where their Tailor-shop was? Any or all assistance; very much appreciated indeed. Robert KEMSLEY

Can S.K.S. please tell me what Identification papers, if any, would have been required to get a marriage licence or to get married in Melbourne circa 1912. My brickwall is my maternal g-father who was an Englishman, claimed he came to Australia around 1910 - 11......he met and married my g-mother who was 2nd generation English-Australian, ...marriage date was 26 October, 1912 in Carlton, Melbourne. He NEVER spoke of his life before coming to Australia other than to claim that he spent some time in India with the British Army...... No one has been able to find any conclusive trace of him prior to his arrival in Melbourne...... If there is any chance that there may be some information confirming any paperwork sighted by an official at the time of their marriage I would like to know where I might apply to get copies of it other than just the marriage certificate. Hoping someone may be able to help me with this request.. Karan Nicolaisen, Ardmore, Ok. USA

I think "Tulip" WRIGHT was a very early Policeman in Port Phillip, c1830s. Perhaps the first: I'm not sure. The Victoria Police was created in the 1880s, by the amalgamation of several other Police Forces. So you have a definitional issue: who had badge No.1 (1880s); or who was the first policeman after separation from NSW (1850s); or who was the first Policeman in Port Phillip District of NSW (1830s) Peter THOMAS Darwin, AUSTRALIA <pmthomas@bigpond.com> -----Original Message----- From: Leanne Baulch [mailto:lea.dave@cairns.net.au] Sent: Wednesday, 10 May 2006 9:31 AM To: AUS-MELBOURNE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: 1st Policeman in Vic Hi everyone, Is there anyway I could find out who the first policeman was in Vic.
