My Margaret Russell is the daughter of James Russell and Mary Ann O'Grady and she was born at Beechworth in 1867. 3. Ernene Is it possible that there was a second marriage here somewhere. I had the same thing with my ggrandparents where half the children were registered to Maria Nicol the others to Maria Byron. As her married name was not exactly common it had me puzzled as how this man seem to have two partners by the name of Maria. it turned out Maria had been reared by a stepfather Byron, but her natural father was Nicol, hence two maiden names. It could also be a mispronunciation, if Margaret was illiterate, she may not have realised they had written her mother's name down incorrectly. I would make few comments about it. One is that the plethora of open windows in the buildings suggests that it was a sanitorium for the treatment of TB. Another thing I found unusual in the photo was the flagpole, which has that cross-strut that I cannot name for want of appropriate terminology, but looks to me like something one might see in a Naval establishment - and it even looks like there is a furled up flag hanging up there. although that might be a tree behind. If you take a magnifying glass to the photo, you should see the detail better than I can in the copy. The best suggestion I can come up with for identifying the photo is to post a copy to the Royal Historical Society of Victoria "My Connected Community" - there are 161 local historians subscribed covering a good part of Victoria, and I hope someone amongst them would be able to identify it. I've done a copy of the copy with my digital camera. http://mc2.vicnet.net.au/ This is the link to "My Connected Community" - search the site to find the Royal Historical Society of Victoria mc2. I've submitted it to go into the photo albums. I'm not sure if you will be able to see it unless you are subscribed, but have a look and see. The photo will have to be approved by the owner of the group, but I don't expect that to be a problem. If it is not up tonight, it probably will be by tomorrow. And no, I didn't have any Frost relations living in East Malvern. :-) Best wishes, Lenore

    3. Dear Listers.... To all of you who have been sending in some very helpful suggestions, re investigations into overseas records both civil and military,........its all been done.....we have paid an expert on the GRUBB family to look into it for us over in London and he has come up with nothing that fits with what little we have to go on....... As he NEVER spoke of his parents or siblings, we are grasping at straws and I was hoping that maybe a birth certificate or something of that nature, that may have given some hard and fast evidence of who he was and where he came from, may have had to have been shown for proof of age before a marriage certificate could have been issued....... All I was initially wanting to know, was if the Law around 1912 required such proof to be presented Evelyn Harding <emh_37@qld.chariot.net.au> wrote: Karan, have you tried English archives or War Office records for your ggrandfather? some websites below may help. good luck Evelyn http://www.a2a.org.uk/ http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/rdleaflet.asp?sLeafletURL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Ecatalogue%2Enationalarchives%2Egov%2Euk%2Fleaflets%2Fri2006%2Ehtm&lBack=-1&j=1 http://immigrantships.net/departures/england.html http://shippinglists.museum.vic.gov.au/index_passengers.asp ----- Original Message ----- From: "Karan Nicolaisen" To: Sent: Friday, May 12, 2006 4:32 AM Subject: [AUS-MELB] Re:.What I.D. would have been required c. 1912 > Can S.K.S. please tell me what Identification papers, if any, would have > been required to get a marriage licence or to get married in Melbourne > circa 1912. > > My brickwall is my maternal g-father who was an Englishman, claimed he > came to Australia around 1910 - 11......he met and married my g-mother who > was 2nd generation English-Australian, ...marriage date was 26 October, > 1912 in Carlton, Melbourne. 3. could it have been james austin, if so this is he although I think the fellow on the bottom is more likely as he was born Plymouth. I found the two youngest boys and Harriet's death but not Justine. No luck on the last Austin's death either, Maybe they went to NSW too. Carmel Digger - Pioneer Index.
