Hi Travis Thanks for this - I thought it had been taken over too but someone sent me details from a sort of group business website with a phone number for W G APPS and SONS still in St Kilda. I will ring them today, and will not be surprised if they answer "good Morning, Le Pines" . No internet or email given for APPS itself so probably it really does not exist under that name, just as you say. I don't expect I will be coming down to the tour late May. There has been a lot of things on the last couple of weeks for one thing - and now my daughter and her partner of over 10 years have made a wedding reception booking for October. They also moved last week - things are hectic there, and Jen and I have to go shopping for the cake this weekend (by appointment at this shop she likes, thanks to internet) and then the dress first, birdesmaid's dress second, and then mine. In sopare minutres at home, once the hosuework and a bit f gardening is done, I am sorting through the family history stuff which is houwI found this tiny little cutting of the funeral notice. Nothing else on thepage, just the notice clipped out so onecolumn wide by about 5 lines high. How on earth did such a tiny thing get preserved in a box of cards and stuff? I had done a rough sort when I first got it years back swhenwe had to clear Mum's house to rent it out to pay for her nursing home, but I just shoved all such things in an envelope and sealed it for safe keeping. I did not expect it would be four years before I got back to it. I do intend to come down to Brighton and go through and find the actual grave even though you sent the photo intially, and see about a marker for it. But that will be during the week when the office is open so not, probably, when you are around. I suspect it will be after the wedding before I really get to things of genealogy again. And I shoud do the same for Tom Hunter's mother who is in St Kilda and Tom's wife and son, my uncle, who are in Springvale. None are marked.. In the meantime, get this stuff sorted andinto a good storage system. I want acid free but not sure about costs; it might have to be the best I can afford and tough if it is not proper archival quality. The very mportant things will go inacid free .. Make photocopies of the lot of course, and one copy of it all for each of my three children and a few spares for any grandchildren I might get. Bye for now Dawn -----Original Message----- From: Travis Sellers [mailto:tsellers@siag.com.au] Sent: Tuesday, 16 May 2006 6:19 PM To: AUS-MELBOURNE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [AUS-MELB] Re: funeral directors (Apps) Hello Dawn - Long time no hear. (Will you be coming to our tour on 28/5?) Don Chambers in "100 Years of Le Pine 1891-1991" covers a whole chapter on the Apps firm. It was founded by William George Apps in Fitzroy sometime after a stint on the goldfields. With his background as a cabinet-maker and upholsterer, he set up a business in Collingwood possibly as early as 1854.. Four years later he moved to Moor St, Fitzroy. The first known funeral Apps carried out was in March 1860. Many cabinet-makers cum coffin makers branched into the lucrative business of funerals. W. G. Raven was another example. W G Apps had 12 children, but several died at a young age. Many of the Apps family are at St. Kilda Cemetery. Arthur Apps (a well-known St. Kilda identity) opened the St. Kilda branch in 1885. By 1895, William G. Apps retired to St. Kilda leaving the business to his sons, hence the name "Apps and Son". The St. Kilda branch appears to have operated initially from 155 Fitzroy St, Fitzroy and thereafter at two locations in Robe Street (No 16 and No 40). After the Second World War, the firm were located at 395 High (Carlisle) Street, St. Kilda Two of the biggest funerals undertaken by Apps were Sir William Clarke (1897) and Sir John Monash (1931) - massive affairs. In 1979 another old firm - Roderick McKenzie at South Melbourne was taken over by Apps and Son. In 1984, Le Pine took over the three Apps business - High Street (Carlisle Street), Clarendon St South Melbourne and Burgundy Street Heidelberg and are still operating today. I am sure Le Pine will still have the old Apps records. Kind regards Travis M. Birthday cards, letters of condolence, and so on. I have just found the clipping of the funeral notice of my paternal grandfather, Tom HUNTER, who died about 16 years before I was born. (Alfred Thomas HUNTER.) It was conducted by the funeral directors APPS and SON in St Kilda, Friday 11th September. (1931 according to the Brighton cemetery.) It is a name I remember but is no longer in the white pages. Does anyone know what has become of this company and where any records (if they survive) may be kept? I would like of course to see the records relating to my grandfather - I feel I hardly knew Dad's family as they never talked about things like Mum's did. I THINK the same company "did" the funerals of Tom's parents too, both in the 1920s from memory. APPS is ringing bells in my mind from years ago when I was a young child. Maybe they buried Dad's brother Howard Bruce HUNTER who died April 1949 - he also lived in the St Kilda region. I was 2 aned 6 days old I think, but remember him visiting me to give me an Easter egg - and he died on the way home from that visit. APPS was certainly a name I remember being tossed about when funeral directors were needed for Dad's family. thanks for any help Dawn (Croydon, Melbourne) -- Message protected by MailGuard: e-mail anti-virus, anti-spam and content filtering. http://www.mailguard.com.au/mg ==== AUS-MELBOURNE Mailing List ==== ==================================================== Virus warnings are not to be sent to the List! ============================== View and search Historical Newspapers. Hi June, This does not appear to be your "Ellen", (she is Helena NOLAN) married to Robert WATSON, the parent's names are very different although her birth was registered at SALE and had a brother Joseph. Her brother Joseph NOLAN married an Ellen. J. REYNOLDS in 1900. There is a Margaret Ellen REYNOLDS registered in 1884. All except Robert & Helena WATSON nee NOLAN appear to vanish off the index. Hi Warren, I thought this may be Austin's marriage (below) as they were from PLYMOUTH. I suspect they may have gone overseas as there are no births to them here. Then Austin's death is in NEW SOUTH WALES some years later. No sign of Leanora at all. I sent Colleen quite a bit of information on what appears to be Alfred's family. He appears to have married Jessie R. HUNTER in 1897 in NEW SOUTH WALES. Austin & Harriet's death certificates should state where and when they were buried. What you need to : look at is the Sands & McDougall Post Office Directory, which came out : annually, more or less from the 1860s to 1974. It has an alpha section and : a suburban section by street address. These have been reproduced on : microfiche and would be at your nearest genealogical library, or large : library like the one in Auckland. It can be quite time-consuming to go : through these directories year by year, so it would be better for the : quality of your research to plan to do it yourself so you can check it out : throughly. You would certainly be able to follow these tailors' careers : through the Sands & Mc. It would take maybe about two hours to trace them : year by year for twenty years, so it's not a job for a mere'lookup'. : Businesses moved around because they were often in rented premises, so they : might have been in Bridport St one year, and somewhere else the next. : Obviously they were somewhere else numbered 306 - or the street was : renumbered. : : : Best wishes, : : Lenore Frost : Essendon, Vic : : : : ==== AUS-MELBOURNE Mailing List ==== : ==================================================== : If you wish to make personal contact with List Admin Ray at batie@ozemail.com.au : : ============================== : Find your ancestors in the Birth, Marriage and Death Records. : New content added every business day. Hello Dawn - Long time no hear. APPS was certainly a name I remember being tossed about when funeral directors were needed for Dad's family. thanks for any help Dawn (Croydon, Melbourne) -- Message protected by MailGuard: e-mail anti-virus, anti-spam and content filtering. http://www.mailguard.com.au/mg
The earlist Victorian Roll is 1856, not sure if was bt Electoral Districts, then 1899 Referendum for the Commonwealth. First really useful and complete Roll was 1903. Check with Genealogy section, State Library of Victoria. I know they have some records of Funeral Directors on micro-film. Pretty sure I have seen Apps. Probably worth a trip to the Library. I think you will find them under the IN series. Ask at the desk.
