    3. Sorry, another little thing, William Henry was born ARCHERTON, WEXFORD, IRELAND, Francis was born WEXFORD, IRELAND, think Archerton was a farm or is it another town ? Any record found may have born in Archerton. Also on birth records of children, some list mother as ELIZA O'NEIL, NEIL and NIEL. Thanks again Colleen ----- Original Message ----- From: Colleen Wells To: AUS-MELBOURNE-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, May 17, 2006 4:54 PM Subject: Re: Francis and William Henry Doyle Good afternoon list, Just wish to repost this information in the event someone can assist. (I think we got side tracked looking for Warren's "Austin Power") I am trying to find the death record of WILLIAM HENRY DOYLE aged 1 and his sister or brother FRANCIS DOYLE aged abt 3, the passenger list on departure from London has Francis as a male, but on arrival in Vic Francis is listed as a female. ARRIVAL IN MELB 1879 on the ship AFGHAN John & Eliza Doyle with children:- James, Thomas, John, Joseph, Mary Agnes (nick name George), Francis and William Henry. I have had a really GOOD LOOK at the original passenger lists, even counted the number of children of other families and these two are defiantly missing. They must have died at sea, but are on the PROV list as having arrived in Melb. The Afghan departed for Sydney just a few days after arrival in Melb with the Doyle family onboard, except for the 2 little ones. Another thing is when the ship left London Mary Agnes Doyle aged 5 was listed a GEORGE, but on arrival in Melb she was listed as Mary Agnes, I have her birth cert, but seems funny they named her George !! Many thanks Colleen NSW

    3. Let me just say you can not always go on an age in their death year! A rellie of our was always very funny about her age, it wasn't until she went into a nursing home and the family was left to clean up the house to get ready for sale we found in fact her papers for when she was brought out from England with her Mother on the Mother papers did it give her true age! Turns out she was in fact 12 years older than she would ever admit even to her own Son!. So she wasn't a very "happy Lady" when we surprised her with her 100th Birthday party, but it was only at that party that she admitted to everyone that yes she hated the age factor and yes she had lied for years about her age! 3. Hello Listers, I'm new to this list and am searching connections to RIELLY/ MAHER/ LE BROCQ with known connections to Mt Egerton, the northeast, and Ivanhoe/Northcote I am especially interested in John Rielly who seems to have disappeared in/from the northeast (around Wahring/ Nagambie/ Longwood) in the 1890's. Another lister kindly suggested I check the 1899 Referendum to the Commonwealth. I wonder if anyone has access to this and would be willing to check for John? Many thanks, Merryl San Diego

    3. Hi Warren, I e-mailed Colleen off-list with everything I could find on the family / families when she first posted the message some time ago. The age of "James Austin" suits that of Austin Senior. Charles I assume would have been buried at sea, he died 15th July 1854. It is possible that (Austin Senior) Harriet & Francis may be buried in the BENDIGO area since Justina apparently had recorded they immigrated to BENDIGO. Austin Junior and Alfred did indeed die in NEW SOUTH WALES. They may well be buried at ROOKWOOD Cemetery but if they are they are not listed on the ROOKWOOD CD. When you purchase their death certificates they should state where and when they were buried, their marital status and any children etc. to them. Either Austin & Alfred went overseas for a time and returned or they were not enrolled to vote. Neither appear on the NEW SOUTH WALES 1903 Electoral Roll. Justina married a John Joseph CONNOR and she died in 1937 in NEW ZEALAND. Justina Mary has listed her father as Austin "Synus" POWER. I have just received a e-mail from Colleen. Is the POWER family your family or her's? I have sent her quite a bit of information, has she sent it on to you? 2. KEMSLEY, Robert N. G.
    3. Hi Lenore; Although I am asking for assistance from the List; I am still nibbling away at myself and am still learning of the MITCHELL family; Tailors of Melbourne. From information supplied me and from my own research Monday night; I am tending to believe that perhaps; both MITCHELL brothers (James & Frederick) had Tailor shops of their own and if this thinking is correct; then; one was located 96 Bridport St, South Melbourne and the more recent I found from the Melbourne telephone book Monday night was: MITCHELL McCABE Menswear, Men's Clothing, 306-308 Clarendon St, South Melbourne 3205. We've an old family photo given us of one of these shops and I take it to be the latter as it's shown as thus: ?04 Practical Tailors 30?, (There is a sign above, which is mostly hidden, as is the Street number by posts) It has double sides Glass Window Displays and across the fronts of is "MITCHELL & McCABE" The above does not agree with the present Street numbering, but I think? it's one and the same? I would take it to be 104, as it looks like a single fronted shop? Yes; I guess I could do as you suggest re the Directories, but as you said, it would be very time consuming and I wouldn't know where to start initially. I will get there eventually; even if we've got to make a trip to Melbourne ourselves later in the year? We plan in the future; to tour the South Coast of NSW and down into Victoria and around to Melbourne, as we've never been down that way or not that far down. Kindest Regards; Robert KEMSLEY ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lenore Frost" <lenore10@hotmail.com> To: <AUS-MELBOURNE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, May 15, 2006 8:42 PM Subject: RE: [AUS-MELB] Frederick Mitchell, Tailor of 96 Bridport St, South Melbourne. Subject: Re: Frederick Mitchell, Tailor of 96 Bridport St, South Melbourne. Another Fellow Lister was good enough to find the following for us: "Frederick Mitchell was listed as a tailor at 96 Bridport St, South Melbourne". Up until now; we've assumed that both James & Frederick MITCHELL, Tailors of Melbourne had their shop in Melbourne's CBD, but we are now wondering if it was at this address; 96 Bridport St, South Melbourne? Fredericks 2 eldest Sons; William Kent & Herbert Frederick were also Tailors. Does anyone know this area and if so; is there a shop or shops heresabouts? We've also a couple of photos of the MITCHELL Tailors shop: It's a 2 story building (With similar on both sides of and abutting) with 2 windows above the shop. Across the top of doorway and above the road gutter is a sign - "304 Practical Tailors" Below this and across the Glass Display Windows is "MITCHELL & McCABE"; this is also repeated below the windows. Does this help in any way; to identify the shop and it's then whereabouts? Bearing in mind; that this would have been some years back now? Kindest Regards; Robert KEMSLEY Hi Robert, You do have very useful information to identify the shops. What you need to look at is the Sands & McDougall Post Office Directory, which came out annually, more or less from the 1860s to 1974. It has an alpha section and a suburban section by street address. These have been reproduced on microfiche and would be at your nearest genealogical library, or large library like the one in Auckland. It can be quite time-consuming to go through these directories year by year, so it would be better for the quality of your research to plan to do it yourself so you can check it out throughly. You would certainly be able to follow these tailors' careers through the Sands & Mc. It would take maybe about two hours to trace them year by year for twenty years, so it's not a job for a mere'lookup'. Businesses moved around because they were often in rented premises, so they might have been in Bridport St one year, and somewhere else the next. Obviously they were somewhere else numbered 306 - or the street was renumbered. Best wishes, Lenore Frost Essendon, Vic This email was cleaned by emailStripper, available for free from http://www.papercut.biz/emailStripper.htm

    3. Thank you to all who helped. I was given a phone number - which turned out to be for LePine Funerals. That confirmed other information Travis gave me about a takeover. The lady there was very pleasant but said there was limited information only and not all of that was allowed to be given out - and that was if it could be read as the records are old, faded, etc. She gave me an email address for me to give her the details of the people who had died. As I sent the email only half an hour ago, I have not received an answer yet! Dawn (Melbourne)

    3. Hi Chris; I did indeed; check out the site you advised; even going back On Line to do so and thought that was the shop shown in the old family photo that we have, but further examination of, says no unfortunately and I now wonder if they had more than one store, as the photo we have is of "MITCHELL & McCABE - ?04 Practical Tailors 3??" so looks like 304/306? somewhere or other? Monday night I went "Googling" finding "MITCHELL McCABE Menswear, Men's Clothing, 306-308 Clarendon St, South Melbourne 3205" which also seems very promising indeed? Both the picture you directed me to and the photo we have are very similar in many ways; seeming to be almost the same design etc, except for the odd difference in design. In the information you found for us; does it mention what the shop was or who then had? Thank you ever so very much, as yes; this seems to be one of their shops? and the info you've been good enough to supply us, adds to the interest? Hilda May Williams and her sister were nurses. I have a feeling they trained in Victoria. There is not much about them. May as Hilda was known became a Matron and according to family, May might have been a part owner of Avonhurst and Llandysil private hospitals in Melb. Is there anyway of finding more about their nursing careers. I also know that May did work with John Flynn and the RFDS in NT. Thankyou once again Leanne Baulch Canberra

(Will you be coming to our tour on 28/5?) Don Chambers in "100 Years of Le Pine 1891-1991" covers a whole chapter on the Apps firm. It was founded by William George Apps in Fitzroy sometime after a stint on the goldfields. With his background as a cabinet-maker and upholsterer, he set up a business in Collingwood possibly as early as 1854.. Four years later he moved to Moor St, Fitzroy. The first known funeral Apps carried out was in March 1860. Many cabinet-makers cum coffin makers branched into the lucrative business of funerals. W. G. Raven was another example. W G Apps had 12 children, but several died at a young age. Many of the Apps family are at St. Kilda Cemetery. Arthur Apps (a well-known St. Kilda identity) opened the St. Kilda branch in 1885. By 1895, William G. Apps retired to St. Kilda leaving the business to his sons, hence the name "Apps and Son". The St. Kilda branch appears to have operated initially from 155 Fitzroy St, Fitzroy and thereafter at two locations in Robe Street (No 16 and No 40). After the Second World War, the firm were located at 395 High (Carlisle) Street, St. Kilda Two of the biggest funerals undertaken by Apps were Sir William Clarke (1897) and Sir John Monash (1931) - massive affairs. In 1979 another old firm - Roderick McKenzie at South Melbourne was taken over by Apps and Son. In 1984, Le Pine took over the three Apps business - High Street (Carlisle Street), Clarendon St South Melbourne and Burgundy Street Heidelberg and are still operating today. I am sure Le Pine will still have the old Apps records. Kind regards Travis M. Birthday cards, letters of condolence, and so on. I have just found the clipping of the funeral notice of my paternal grandfather, Tom HUNTER, who died about 16 years before I was born. (Alfred Thomas HUNTER.) It was conducted by the funeral directors APPS and SON in St Kilda, Friday 11th September. (1931 according to the Brighton cemetery.) It is a name I remember but is no longer in the white pages. Does anyone know what has become of this company and where any records (if they survive) may be kept? I would like of course to see the records relating to my grandfather - I feel I hardly knew Dad's family as they never talked about things like Mum's did. I THINK the same company "did" the funerals of Tom's parents too, both in the 1920s from memory. APPS is ringing bells in my mind from years ago when I was a young child. Maybe they buried Dad's brother Howard Bruce HUNTER who died April 1949 - he also lived in the St Kilda region. I was 2 aned 6 days old I think, but remember him visiting me to give me an Easter egg - and he died on the way home from that visit. APPS was certainly a name I remember being tossed about when funeral directors were needed for Dad's family. thanks for any help Dawn (Croydon, Melbourne) -- Message protected by MailGuard: e-mail anti-virus, anti-spam and content filtering. http://www.mailguard.com.au/mg ==== AUS-MELBOURNE Mailing List ==== ==================================================== Virus warnings are not to be sent to the List! ============================== View and search Historical Newspapers.
