    2. Elva Brooke
    3. Hi All I understood that "Relict" was used when the female had been married previously and her first husband had died and she married again. Thus - Elizabeth relict of Alfred and widow of William (or wife of William). Elva

    3. I've had a more indepth look at this lady and it seems both Ada and Joan's explanations could fit the circumstance here. The three sons mentioned pre-deceased her. They died at 3, 4, and 7. Sadly two of them only a few months apart. There may have been a daughter not mentioned on the head stone - there's an 18-year old woman of a different surname buried in the same grave 29 years before Agnes that's recorded on the cemetery website. No William I can tie to her but the wording "of the late" certainly indicates he passed away before she did. So someone ordered the head stone "In memory of our dear mother" when she was the last buried in that grave. There could have been more children. Many thanks for the responses. I have an explanation for REFLICT that fits. Alan. Ada Ackerly wrote: > Sorry, Denise, it means "widow of" indicating that the husband died > first. Now everyone is thinking it was me! Sorry you all should know by now, it is very rear I ever un-sub anyone with out notice! So if you know anyone who might have slipped of the lists or a friend could you just ask them to re-subscribe please as their were far too many to do on Sunday night and it would not have worked as the computer back at rootsweb would have spat the dummy again. 3. Many thanks for the responses. Firstly apologies for the spelling error. Subject line was wrong and the actual spelling is REFLICT - not RELFICT. There was definately an "F" in there. So in terms of Travis' response it possibly could be an original spelling error? Denise, Loretta, Sherrie - could be so regarding your explanations. She was 82 years old according to the Necropolis website search. Joan The headstone was placed by her children. She wasn't the last surviving family member. I understand this isn't an exact science. I guess it's possible this may be a local interpretation or a cultural interpretation? Alan. 2. Hi Alan - My guess, seeing that you mentioned that the monument is worn is that the said word is "relict" a quite common word used. For example at the Cheltenham Pioneer Cemetery: "Sacred to the memory of / Margaret / relict of the late / John FLEMING / who died 6th May 1911, / aged 78 years. / R.I.P / also Mary A. / beloved wife of / Michael ROCHE / died 30th Jan. 1936. / aged 70 years. / R.I.P / in loving memory of / Patrick John FLEMING / died 4th June 1936 aged 64 yrs. / also / Margaret Hastings FLEMING / loved wife of above / died 5th June 1955 aged 74 yrs." I hope this helps. Kind regards Travis M.
