Sorry Listers, My mathematics have deserted me this evening. The 10 year rule starts in 1998 and 1986 is of course 22 years ago. So the on-line Index[1985] is 13 years behind the 10 year rule. Best regards......Ian.
Hi Listers, Thanks to all those who have supplied info. If the death certificate falls into this "black hole" between 1985 and 1988[start of the 10 year rule] I may not be able to get the certificate under the 10 year rule, if the rule is in fact applied from 1985 to 2008. Do Listers think the current problem is the Index has not been updated from 1985 to 1988, and if I apply I will not be caught up in the 10 year rule? Part of my confusion is when I looked at the on-line site to buy a certificate dated before the 10 year rule the application required the Index number, which I don't have. I don't mind paying for the certificate search, Index number search etc, I'm just worried that if I get caught up in the 10 year rule, even though it is 12 years, I maybe refused the certificate because I'm only a distant cousin of Geoffrey Nicholls. Does anyone know if you can actually get a death certificate under the 10 year rule if it is for family history use, and you are only a distant relation? Best regards.......Ian Nicholls.
Ian There is no way of getting the number unless you pay for a search at BDM, the indexes are not available publicly after 1985. Ian Not able to find this record although there is an Geoffrey Allan Nicholls died the same year and is in the inquest data. I had a quick look at the bdm site, the indexes and certificates up until the end of 1986 are on line but you would have to apply for the death certificate and pay for the check, unless you have an exact date. The restrictions apply to deaths less than 10 yrs. I know the bdm office is very busy, they are in the building were I work and there is always a long queue. Hi All, I've been watching this thread, you might try looking in St Kilda Cemetery, Springvale or Melbourne General, is where I would be starting then I would be looking at Kew Cemetery. Just my thoughts on the subject.
