Hi Libby There were two John Ralston's who arrived on the Great Britain in 1868 along with a female Cathe. I also searched the PROV Wills and Probate Index and again there are two John Ralston's - one died in Casterton which is a few miles further on than Hamilton but his wife was now Eleanor and there were no children named. Perhaps his wife and child died and he married again. Eleanor's Probate is also there. PROV Wills and Probate can be searched at http://www.prov.vic.gov.au/access/probate.asp Shirlee Wellington NZ ----- Original Message ----- From: <Libby.Morrah@csiro.au> To: <AUS-MELBOURNE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 02, 2010 1:04 PM Subject: [AUS-MELBOURNE] RALSTON > Good Morning > I am trying to locate John Ralston arrived in 1868. Thanks Glenn. Will take a look too. Chris, >From the Australian War Memorial website.... >http://www.awm.gov.au/units/unit_11211.asp In May 1917 the battalion participated in the successful, but costly, second battle of Bullecourt. It was involved for only a single day – 3 May – but suffered almost 80 per cent casualties. The AIF’s focus for the rest of the year was the Ypres sector in Belgium, and the 24th’s major engagement there was the seizure of Broodseinde Ridge. He was lucky but at what cost to his health. They were terrible times. My husband was conscripted in 1966 but luckily didn't go to Vietnam but I know plenty who did.He was in Sydney for most of his 2 years. and I was in Melbourne. I just checked my grandfather's records .. part of his duty ... he started off in Gallipoli in 1915 .. then he was transferred .. he was in the 5th light trench mortar battery .. on duty 5 March 1917 .. was wounded and also ended up with trench fever ... he had been in hospital from 16 Apr till the 13 May 1917 .. put back on duty on that day .. fought and was admitted again to hospital with 'effects of gas' .. then he went back to fight after that .. and then ended up with a gunshot wound in the knee ... by comparison he was 'lucky' .. he came home .... Maree
