I reckon there's a lot of us! My family was told for years that mary was a maori princess!! An old great aunt of mine took some old photos to the dept of aboriginal affairs in canberra and they have told us she was from the worimi because of the bone structure in the face - apparently it's quite distinctive - I'll keep going - probably hit the wall lynne >From: "Karen Payne" <kpayne@fishinternet.com.au> >Reply-To: AUS-KOORI-L@rootsweb.com >To: AUS-KOORI-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [AUS-Koori] mary hogan >Date: Tue, 16 Jan 2001 16:00:28 +1100 > >Hi Sam >It seems that there are a few of us in the same situation. There is a book entitled IF EVERYONE CARED by Margaret Tucker which might assist some searching there aboriginal families around the Albury /Wondonga region. It is her story, and it includes many references to other aboriginal families. She was born in 1904 in that region and includes some history of early families. Also, it can provide clues on where to locate other families from that time.. as many where placed in such institutions as Cootamundra Domestic Training HOme and etc. Jenny Fawcett
Hi Sam It seems that there are a few of us in the same situation. I have also been searching for my Koori ancestor in the Port Macquarie area and am stuck. Mary Hogan was my ggg grandmother. She married John Phillips and their son Albert married Harriett Stephens in 1870. I am led to believe she was from the worimi people and the family lived in the dorrigo/armidale district. Hi Sam I will see how I go with the info you have given me. p.s . you wrote in your mail My great grandfather, George Kinchington, Mary Ann (Polly) Bakes In Albury in 19...something (did you leave out married in Albury?) also you mentioned ATSIC helping you. was that an error? do you mean AIATSIS? I'll let you know if I come up with anyone! keep your fingers crossed Lisa Arnold -----Original Message----- From: Sam Beattie [mailto:russam@bigpond.com] Sent: Sunday, 21 January 2001 12:15 PM To: AUS-KOORI-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [AUS-Koori] who was she...? Hi Lisa Sorry for the delay in replying. I have been searching for the scant information that I have. It was in one of the piles I have here in front of me!! Thankyou so much for you kind offer of help. This is a matter I dearly want clarification on. There is family legend that says that Mary Ann Bakes was the daughter of a full blood aboriginal woman, whose maiden name was Gorman. My great grandfather, George Kinchington, Mary Ann (Polly) Bakes In Albury in 19...something and apparently Polly Bakes had two sisters, Lisa and Alice. Apparently Polly lived in Kangaroo Flats before they were married, after which the couple lived in Dederang. All of this could be wrong. I have no pictures of these people so I don't even know if they look Aboriginal... I have seen my grandmother and her brother and there are features and skin tones that suggest this may be true. My mum and her siblings look possibilities too.... but who knows. I am just interested in laying this myth to rest or clarifying it. You probably read my post about ATSIC's help. I got a list of children born to a Dorman woman and her Bakes husband in Yackandandah (Vic), with no Mary Ann or Polly... I look forward to your reply. I am searching for the family of Florence May CROWE who was born in 1924 to Lily Grace CROWE. She was born in Brisbane and for at least some of her childhood she resided in 'Rhyndarra House', a Salvation Army Orphanage at Yeronga. I believe Lily married Dave Williams in 1932. Lily, at some time, lived in Eromanga. Florence, at some time, became known as Mary. She married Walter Shiells in 1944. I would appreciate any information. My name is Phil Drummy.I'm an australian musician involved in the multi-ethnical music group Song Line currently recording its second CD with Tinder Records, USA. The group performs original music world-wide, and has numerous world ethnic influences, and the musicians come from different backgrounds. The main focus however is on the indigenous australian element. My group has collaborated with different aboriginal australians over the years, and toured europe and asia with some of them, particularly of the Koorie people, (Waggan Yuulunbrrgn ,Wirrapunda Family and Ngooran from Vic. and NSW etc.). I am writing from Italy, but my collegue is in Australia, presently touring many of the central australian reserves playing for the different indigenous groups there. He can make any prior arrangements with this person before my arrival. I will be in Australia from mid dicember until end january with the aim of meeting, recording and organizing all of this, flying the singer to Adelaide where the recording will take place, or getting to where he/she is.It's imperative that this singer has experience in performance and can sing in his or her native tongue, and has a grasp of his traditional dance, language and culture, and is willing to share this to a wide audience. Can you refer me to a singer who fits this description or to someone who can assist if you cannot? I have had some difficulty locating someone who can sing their local language and is reliable, enthusiastic and wants to perform internationally, and am running out of time before I arrive, hence my plea for help! It would be a fantastic opportunity for the right person anyway.Any help would be greatly appreciated.Thanking you in anticipation of your reply, Sincererly Phil Drummy

Sue here, I am writing for two reasons. Firstly, Kath Schilling at Link Up in NSW has sent me a huge pile of stuff, I had done some prior research, and discovered that I am related to a whole heap of people, basically any indigenous people who have the surnames Maynard and Villiers (my family brought that name to this continent way back on the firs unassisted passage ships, also anyone from round Ballarat with the surnames Reed or Blainey. I would love to contact other Maynards. I am also the founder and National co-ordinator of what is now an Australia wide group of people getting cuddly toys to kids in crisis, so I would love to contact anyone who works with families in crisis anywhere in Australia. I live down in Frankston, and would love to get in contact with local people, I had an article in the paper (Frankston and Hastings Independent) about a new project I'm trying to get off the ground, getting a place where unemployed people can come and talk, get information, training, take some work for the dole people and give them the vital training and experience and reference so they can get a good job, and anyone who wants to do voluntary work sorting, making, washing toys to get to the kids. I know there are people down in Hastings, and probably round Frankston also, but I don't know where to go to meet people. I'm trying to get a lot of different things going that will help people who don't get a fair go, and of course number one is Aboriginal people, not just because I'm related but I've done enough study at Uni to know what has happened before. I want to talk to local people about what is needed, and work out with them how we can get it (I'm disabled, but I can talk to anyone), and I want to try to get in contact with remote communities that are being ripped off and need someone to help with getting supplies of stuff for whatever they want to do up to them. Anyone who wants to contact me can either phone 9770 2955 or write to me at P.O. Box 6106, Karingal, Vic 3199. I don't want to tell people what to do, just help them do what they want, I know my way round the government departments and how they work, I just want to help what I consider my people. Kath said that if I consider myself Indigenous then I can say I am, but I'm a bit scared none of you will want to talk to me. Guess I"m hoping that some of you will write back to me and let me know if you want to know me. i don't judge people by anything other than how they treat me,I'm just hoping that some others out there might be like me too. Will wait and hope (at least until Kath sends me the directory she said she is sending). Anyone wanting to know what I'm doing, have a look at the web page. I'll get the article from the Independent up there as soon as I can get it scanned. bye for now Sue Maynard (also known as Teddy Bear Sue) Sue Maynard,Founder Bears who Care Inc.
