    3. Hi Lynne, My name is Leah Armstrong and I am a descendant from Queen Margaret from the Awabakul Clan from Lake Macquarie. Did you know that Armidale University has a lot of info, you could try there, also that the tribes from Scone are all at Armidale. I haven't been able to get there myself, I am lucky my sisters Nola & Kerrie are helping me. It takes a lot of time effort and a bit of frustration, but always go over your notes, always have a note pad with you, put the date and where you received your information, when doing family research it is always a good idea to join you local Society or Group, as they have seminars and the speakers are great. I get carried away sometimes, I write stories and can never keep them short. I belong to The Caravan Club of Australia, another way to go walkabout. Hope I have helped in a small way. 3. Hello everyone and happy new year Most of us are in the same boat. The long line of British and Australian governments did a good job with their policies of 'protection' and we learned to keep our secrets. Only one generation it takes for the stories not to be told and they are gone. Fortunately though, those very same governments from day one kept records and seemed proud of their accomplishments (so much so that they don't see the need for 'sorry'). We know about the massacres, the punitive expeditions all from the Colonial Secretaries papers. There are the blanket returns and reserve and mission reports to name but a few. These reports are mostly public documents but the government apparently continues with the patronising attitude of 'protection. I need permission from them to access many of the files that contain the information about my people and family. They say there is a privacy issue, this may be the case but as we can see from our friends on this site we some times need to access these files to find out just where we belong, it might be the starting point. Sorry for the ramble, I just feel so frustrated at the barriers we still encounter. Some of us have had some success and I see also from other genealogy sites a lot of information being exchanged. I think if we posted more information / requests and findings and kept the site 'busy' it may benefit all the subscribers. Try to get others to join also, its amassing how many names or places come up on these sites that we know of. This link was sent to me by a friend it might be useful, but those of you really struggling let us know where you have looked and we might be able to add to your list. http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/publications/aboriginalguide/aboriginalguidetoc.htm Anyway happy hunting Cheryl Darug descendant

    2. Adrian & Georgina Altona
    3. Hello Everyone, My name is Adrian Altona, and I live in Tamworth. I have only just recently joined the Koori list. My wife Georgina is Aboriginal (Kamilaroi) and we have been tracing both of our family trees for the past 11 years. Georgina's family mostly all come from this area around the North West of NSW - Tamworth, Moree, Quirindi, Caroona, Pilliga and Coonabarabran. Her ggg grandfather - Alf Sampson and family were the first family to settle at Walhallow, Caroona. >>Kath Shilling, at the genealogy dept at ATSIC in Canberra is THE lady >>who knows all about the aboriginal families and their genealogy, she is >>very very helpful and will direct you on how to find your ancestors, Kath Schilling is very helpful and it is well worth getting in contact with her. The dept is: The Australian Institute of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Studies AIATSIS You should be able to reach Kath Schilling at this email address family@aiatsis.gov.au >>there were quite a lot of records for Aboriginals living in towns , but >>not so for those living on stations and farms they have almost no >>records, Try all the census records!!....if they lived or worked on a Station, it is quite possible they may have been recorded. I found this to be true of the 1910 or 1920 census records, as all those of my wife's family that worked on Walhallow Station, Caroona were recorded. 3. I put an add in the "Chinchilla News" as well as a local paper in Taroom saying im looking for family members inthe area.Yesterday,I got a letter from Nancy HERBERT, who lives Emu Plains.N.S.W. Email address:- nancyd@globalfreeway.com.au. She states, her sister, wholives in Chinchilla, saw the add and contacted her. Nancy knows of my grandad William and her grandfather was Thomas RICHARDS,William's older brother. She didnt date the letter but says they were going away for 10 days, So I better give it a few more days before itry ringing her.Said she has alot of info on our family,so you people may have all she has.But I will need the info on Thomas's line anyway. I did get a few other calls from miles but seems there was two Richards families in the area or else the one that is there now seem to think we are not related.Even got onto their Grandma who said she didnt recognize any of the names I mentioned to her. Got the latest photos of Emma, you sent Stan.Thanks. I will have to get back to them and see if i can enhance them as well as i did the 1st lot.So far, the latest one goes bad when I get it out to 5 x 8 size.Still waiting for your comments Judy re the list Isent you.Have igot it right. Is there more ican add to it? 3. Hi all, Just to let you know, Kath Schilling actually works in the Family History Unit at the Australian Institute if Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS). She is able to be contacted through the AIATSIS website. (www.aiatsis.gov.au) Just click on the Library link. AIATSIS is in the middle of relocating, so you may find that contact may be delayed. Kath is extremely helpful, so it's worth contacting her.
