Judith, By chance I caught your message concerning Jeremiah Ryan son of Simon and Johanna who moved to Bendigo and finally Echuca. I am not long returned from Bendigo/Rochester/Rushworth areas in Victoria, and, thanks to the help of several family history societies, e.g. Kyabram, Rochester, AIGS Bendigo to mention three, I have to hand a map of Girgarre East, County of Rodney. This map embraces an area of land that shows fields of varying sizes some of which are held in the names of William, Thomas, John, and Jeremiah Ryan. The northern portion of the section of this map focuses on Cooma Village; the southern edges merge with Waranga (Rushworth). My gr.gr.grandfather, Patrick Ryan lived in both of these areas and worked as a shepherd some time in the late 1860s up to his death in 1872. Received thinking from members of these family history groups is that my Patrick was probably the poorer, or younger member of this Ryan grouping, perhaps a cousin of Jeremiah. I still do not know about his origin in Ireland except that it was Co. Tipperary and that his father was a William Ryan who married a Mary Nolan. I should welcome speaking to you further, off list.
