Transcription of GEORGE FULLER's "RECOLLECTIONS OF LAUNCESTON 1836 - 1847" & related unpublished works held by Mitchell Library, Sydney George Fuller was born in Launceston, Van Diemen's Land, in 1830, the son of a convict transported to Sydney in 1810. His "Recollections of Launceston, 1836-1847, from memory" (compiled from March 1894) is a hand-written unpublished work, held in the Mitchell Library, Sydney. These "Recollections" (115 pages in the original) comprise his notes on Old Launceston, giving a street-by-street description of the town, its buildings and their occupants, together with his personal recollections and stories of the town and its residents in the years 1836 to 1847 - including his version of the "Whale in the Cataract" story. These notes also include a collection of his letters dated 1897, to Ernest Whitfeld of Launceston, as well as other historical submissions collected by Mr Whitfield, as material for public lectures he gave on Old Launceston in the late 1890s. A Transcription of the Recollections was undertaken in 2003 with the permission of Mitchell Library, which authorised the release of the Recollections and all related documents for this transcription work. This Transcription has now been printed and includes Mr Fuller's Sketch Maps from his notes of the main streets of Launceston and an INDEX to the manuscript. Ernest Whitfield's series of articles on "Early Launceston" published in the Launceston Examiner in 1897 will be transcribed later in the year.
