Hi List, I've decided to make a bit of a start on this. I need to build a database, but I can still capture the information in the interim. My aim will be to assist people with lookups (so hopefully I'll get a few more entries). Not sure if I need to seek permission form St Mary's Cathedral? Could anyone advise? Actually - does anyone know if this has already been done? In the meantime, below is the kind of detail that I think would be worth capturing. If you are not sure whether your ancestor was an orphan - but they did get married at St Mary's Cathedral - send me the data anyway. Core Information relating to Marriage at St, Mary's Cathedral, Sydney 1. Date Of Marriage 2. Husband's Name 3. Wife's Name 3.a Irish Orphan (Yes/No/Unsure) 4. Name of Witness 1 5. Name of Witness 2 6. Record Source (ie.Certificate/Transcription/Parish Register) 7. Record Reference (ie.Folio Number) 8. Record Provider (ie your name) 9. Your Contact Details (email address will suffice - so that I can forward to you any subsequent enquiries from an interested party) Supplementary Information if Available 1.Wife Details a.Ship of Arrival b.Date of Arrival c.Native Place of Birth 2. Husband Details a.Ship of Arrival b.Date of Arrival c.Native Place of Birth. Email me off list if you would like to contribute. Cheers, Karen
Karen & List I am not sure if you would need to get permission from St. Mary's before starting your dbase, but would think if wise to enquire especially if people are using the registers from St. Mary's to give you the information. The Marriage Registers of the churches are their property and not State Records. Registers of Catholic Churches are known as sacramental registers and not the ones that the State requires all celebrants to keep. Also contact Judy Webster in Qld, to see if anyone else has or is working on such a dbase. http://www.judywebster.gil.com.au/ and look under Central Register of Indexing Projects in Australia and Specialist Indexing Projects in Australia - Genealogist's Guide. There is another marriage witness index relating to all Australasian records, started by a Hugh Winter in NZ http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~hughw/ My cousin has an index started of witnesses to marriages at St. Mary's, most relating to our family who came from Castletownarra, but as he is constructing it for our own use I don't think he would be willing to share but I will write him and let him know about it and he can then make a decision. We have had problems in the past with people using our information and not acknowledging our contribution. Karen, have you been in contact with the Irish Orphan Commemorative Committee, or with Terrie Pollard who publishes a quarterly magazine, "Clann an Ghorta". In that magazine is a list of people who are keeping details and some constructing dbases on the girls, including the names of descendants, quite a few members are concentrating on the ships our ancestors came on. The intention is to make the dbase available at Hyde Park Barracks. Trevor McLaughlin's new edition of Barefoot & Pregnant should be available by now. Contact the Genealogical Society of Victoria Level 6 179 Queen Street, MELBOURNE 3000 Ph: 03 9670 7033 Fax: 03 9670 4490 or [email protected] Please email me privately if you would like more information and names & addresses of the ship's contacts. bfn Maggie K M Keely Heffernan in Coffs Harbour, NSW, AUSTRALIA researching: BUCKLEY, HEFFERNAN, HERRICK, MALONE, SEYMOUR, TIERNEY from Tip.
