Hi Nicola, You could try the Deniliquin area. He was there in 1872 (Grevilles Post Office Directory), so he may have gone back to his property there after his retirement from office. Shelley The marriage of Michael and Catherine Mary should be on Qld/Brisbane indexes available in Family History or Genealogical libraries. So should the birth of any children. Posting to multiple lists. Headstone at Lancefield Victoria Australia. Don't know these people. Cheers Mick Dowling Melbourne Australia Erected By John Doolan in memory of his beloved mother Ellen Doolan Native of Armagh Ireland who died 4th December 1899 aged 72 years May her soul rest in peace. Amen Also John Doolan dearly loved husband of Mary Doolan who died 28th May 1905 Aged 35 years
Hello All, Am new to the list and appreciate the Dowling, Doolan information even though I am not sure how it fits in right now. Any information about the Doolans or Birminghams that I haven't provided below would be most appreciated. My Irish to Australia were Edward J. Birmingham/Birmingham who was married to Margaret Doolan/Dowling abt 1833 (I presume Ireland). I found a record that I believe is them imigrating to Australia with State Records of NSW, Colonial Secretary: Reports of Vessels Arrived 1832-December 1834, AO Reel 1264, Ref 10, NQ929.3944 8. The Journey of 1833 ship the "Lady East" arrival in Sydney, 15 November 1833. Edward BERMINGHAM 25 Scotland,Blacksmith and Margaret BERMINGHAM, wife 20 are shown as passengers in steerage. Through the NSW vital record site I as able to figure out who the children of Edward and Margaret were. My g-g-grandmother Elizabeth b. 1834, Catherine b. 1836, Ann 1840, Christina 1842, William 1845, and Margaret 1847. Other records indicate that Edward Birmingham left Australia 10/16/1849 on the ship "Duke of Roxborough" and arrived January 14, 1850 (after 99 days from Sydney) to San Francisco according to shipping entries 1849-51 of people whose names appeared in papers as leaving Australia for the California Goldfields. The ship was an English bark, Collard?(I am not sure what this means). There is a funeral notice of a Margaret Birmingham 6 Jan 1852 who died in Australia at her residece Castlereagh St. a few doors south of Bathurst St. (I am not sure what town in Australia this is) leaving a husband and 6 children. This information would fit Margaret Doolan Birmingham but I am not positive it was her. My theory is that she died (because I can't find any record of her being alive in Calif.) and some of her children went to be with their father in Calif. I know for sure that Elizabeth, Margaret and Ann did, but have not found any information on William and Christina. Edward J. Birmingham was a native of Ireland (according to census records for Calif.). I believe he died in 1886 at the age of 77 years old in Alameda County, California. Two of his daughters died in Calif.; Elizabeth(married to Arthur G. Miller) died in 1868, and daughter Margaret (married Benjamin F. Newberry) died in 1872. Daughter Anna(married George Tilley) and was still alive in Alameda County, Calif. in 1880. I have not been able to track her after that. Thank you for viewing this information. Philip, Very sorry to you and to Cheryl, a simple typo, the address should have read IRL-PALATINE-L@rootsweb.com one of the many problems associated with reading the mail from several lists after 1 AM. A quick history lesson: In the early 1700s several parties of Germans from the Palatine region emigrated, via Holland, to England. Many of them subsequently went to Ireland, settling in several areas in the South East. The Irish Palatine Association has a web site at http://www.irishpalatines.org with information about their research and information associated with other resources. Bernice, I have since discovered a birth certificate of John James Horrigan son of Daniel. John James was born in October 1891 and Daniel's age is given as 45 years, which would make his year of birth 1846 and if he died in 1916 he would have been aged 70 at death not 73 as the death certificate says.If he was 46 years in Qld in 1916 his arrival in Qld would have been 1870. Therefore he would have been aged 24 years at time of arrival. Des.
James, I went to our library today and just my luck they were closed. I will not be back in town until next week, will try again then Bernice Thomson -----Original Message----- From: James Desmond Skelly [mailto:deskelly@optusnet.com.au] Sent: Wednesday, 23 April 2003 11:19 AM To: AUS-IRISH-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [AUS-IRISH] SHIP 'INDUS' OUT OF LONDON 7/8/1873 ARRIVED BRISBANE 8/10/1873 I wonder if any listers would have access to the passenger list of the above ship. I have just found Daniel's death cetificate and it says he was 46 years in Qld at the time of his death in 1916, which would make the year of his arrival 1870, so the 1873 arrival is probably not him.
