    1. Re: [AUS-IRISH] Ship "Maryborough"
    2. Colleen Yuke
    3. Hello Peter, I am sorry I can't find a reference to the 'Maryborough' in my library but there are many sites on the net which will be useful to you, go to www.google.com as a search engine & type in Maryborough+ship, you will find ship's pictures by using the name of Nick Vine Hall he runs a search & supply photo company for ship's pictures. You might like to look at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich which has drawings & prints of some 63,000 images their site is www.nmm.ac.uk/ . There are many books written about the life on board for immigrants & these can usually be accessed through your local library or through inter library loan or your local Family Hist./Gen. Society if you are a member, I am currently reading 'Far off in sunlit places' by Jim Hewitson, stories of the Scots in Aust. & NZ. whilst it is not a book strictly about life on board it does give you an insight about what our ancestors were leaving behind & how they coped in Aust. particularly interesting if you have Scots ancestors, as lots of names are mentioned. Good luck Colleen from Qld----- Original Message ----- From: Peter Dolan <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, August 27, 2001 3:48 PM Subject: [AUS-IRISH] Ship "Maryborough" > In 1866 my gr grandparents, Felix and Mary DOLAN arrived in Brisbane Queensland from Ireland via Glasgow Scotland on board the "Maryborough" > > 1. 3. My paternal Grandfather John TYRRELL was b. abt 1846 [That if the info on his death/Marriage certs is correct] in Summerhill County Meath Ireland, the son of John TYRRELL - Dorothea BRUTON. I am having trouble finding his shipping records [if there are any] - I have calculated his arrival in Australia abt 1864-1870. The church records [1893] states he is the SECOND son of John Tyrrell of Monalve County Meath Ireland and a widower. He appears to have travelled between South Australia/Wilcannia/Ryde and I believe was interested in opal/gold mining???? His first wife Mary ? d 1891 in Adelaide with their residence noted as Wilcannia NSW which was his address in 1893 when he married my grandmother - Maria [Mary] GOONREY [GOONRY] c 1866 Athboy [also Balliver] County Meath Ireland the daughter of Michael GOONREY - Marcella DARBY. She arrived 1886 on board 'Port Victor' with brother James. Her siblings were: James: c 1857- Balliver Co Meath d 1908 Wilcania NSW Catherine: c 1857- Balliver Co. Meath Patrick: b abt 1863- Co. Meath d 1894 Ryde Aust Michael: b 1864 - Athboy Co. Meath Owen: b abt 1868- Thomas: b abt 1870- If anyone is interested or connected to these families or can be of any assistance - even with advice of what I should do next will be greatly appreciated. Grateful Meg.

    3. I suggest you also read "The Long Farewell - Perilous voyages of settlers under sail in the great migrations to Australia" by Don Charlwood which gives a wonderful account of shipboard life at this time as well as many first hand experiences from original letters etc. There is a good index with many ships mentioned too. It should be in most public libraries and has recently been reprinted as a paperback. Cheers Lorraine
