Hello People Is anyone researching Martha FEGAN (FAGAN) married Thomas SMITH in Tasmania? Would love to discuss them with you .... Bright Blessings Sandie Fremantle Western Australia
Hi all, I am an anthropologist & historian derived from very old settler stock in Australia; mostly McKenzie stock intermarried with Varcoes who were old Spanish stock long settled in Cornwall before coming out here. Those people intermarried with Nixons, and it was the result most strongly influential in my upbringing. On my father's side mostly Rawsons, Bennetts, Coulstons, of that ilk generally from West Yorkshire, Lancastershire, Wales and Northern Ireland. My surname Hardwick is from my Pop who came out as an orphan from Somerset in 1914 and was quickly snapped up as a prospective husband. I think fondly of him and like to keep his name because he was so kind and gentle a man . . . Most of the rest, including my research data and some of my academic papers can be found on my web site, at: http://users.highway1.com.au/~gruagach For the purposes of my seeking to join this group, my research over the past five years or so has been into the history of the lower South West of Western Australia, 1829-1920. At present I am most interested in information in about 15 Irish women who came out here to WA on four of the Bride Ships in 1853, becoming the great-great-grandmothers of just about this entire district. If anyone can help I am happy to post their names here, what ships they came out in, and where they settled. Warmest regards, Gil

Subject: [HV] re Irish Girls Resent-Date: Thu, 15 Nov 2001 22:25:27 -0700 Resent-From: [email protected] Date: Fri, 16 Nov 2001 16:25:27 +1100 From: "Margaret Guy" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] As a volunteer guide at Hyde Park Barracks where the Irish famine girls stayed after their arrival in Sydney, I thought I would see what information I could find. Unfortunately in my short search through my notes,I have not turned up any websites but did find a list of some books pertaining to them and that time in our history. The Long Farewell, 1993, Charlewood, Don. Burgewood Books, Melbourne (note the extracts from the diary of Fanny Davis) Barefoot and Pregant? Irish Famine Orphans in Australia, 1991, McClaughlin, Trevor. Genealogical Society of Victoria A Decent of Girls: The Irish Famine Orphans of the Thomas Arbuthnot, Mongan, Cheryl and Reid, Richard, Yass Heritage Project (this group of girls from the one vessel all moved to the Yass area) I often tell visitors to the Barracks that very little is know about the many girls who went through the building as, with their marriages, they changed their names. It is only in recent times with people like youself doing family history research that the link is made to the Barracks. I looked up the websites given by Annie but only got results with the first two. If I find the addresses I will post them on the list as I am sure there must be many people with ancestors who came through the Barracks. It is a very interesting time in our history. Margaret.
My husband is a direct descendant of John HANLY of Kilgefin Parish, Kilmacuagh, Roscommon and his wife, Ann DUFFICY. Their daughter, Mary Ann HANLY emigrated to Queensland, Australia, where she married in 1874, Lachlan MacLELLAN of Inverness, Scotland. Anne DUFFICY is mentioned on the headstone inscription on the HANLY family tomb in the Kilgefin Churchyard. We would really like to know more about the DUFFICY and HANLY lines. Hope we can share information with others searching these names. Please see our HANLY -DUFFICY webpage at: http://www.heritagearchaeology.com.au/Directory%20Genealogy/Hanly/hanly. htm Kind regards, Jen ******************************************* Jennifer Lambert Tracey Archaeologist & Heritage Consultant HERITAGE ARCHAEOLOGY PO Box 4265 KINGSTON ACT 2604 AUSTRALIA Tel / Fax 02 62956795 Mobile Tel. 0419011860 *******************************************
Hi Peter I have Cora Num's 2000 book too, but found the correct address on Cyndi's List (which is very helpful for world-wide genealogical info, if you don't know of it - see below). For Tamworth:- http://sites.archivenet.gov.au/tdfhgi/ I tried it out & it definitely works! Meanwhile Cyndi's List is:- www.CyndisList.com Happy hunting Judy Dickinson Sydney Australia > > Peter Dolan <[email protected]> wrote: > > > > Would anyone have the Address, particularly the web or e-mail > address > > of the above group? > > The address given in Cora Num's 2000 edition of "Web Sites for > > Genealogists" no longer seems valid. > > > > I am particularly looking for any Newspaper report of the death of > my > > Grandfather's sister in Tamworth on July 1st. 1918. Would anyone have the Address, particularly the web or e-mail address of the above group? The address given in Cora Num's 2000 edition of "Web Sites for Genealogists" no longer seems valid. I am particularly looking for any Newspaper report of the death of my Grandfather's sister in Tamworth on July 1st. 1918. Her death certificate reads "Cause of Death : Shock from burns accidentally received through her clothes catching fire. .... Inquiry unnecessary." I would assume that there would have been press reports of an accident so horrific. Has anyone any thoughts of where I could find out more information? Regards, Peter W. Dolan [email protected]

Hi All, First of all, my apologies to anyone who gets multiple copies of this message on various lists, or who have already heard this story. I am at a total dead end and am grasping at straws, most of which seem to disintergrate as soon as I get hold of them <bg>. First I will tell you what we know from actual documents. Frederick BEATTIE enlisted in the Royal Marines on 26th June 1847 at Killybegs in Donegal, Ireland. We have full records of his marriage to Ann(e) Willey in 1861, births of various children, emigration to Australia in 1883 and death in 1884. (can't find where he's buried, but that's another story.) Now for what we don't know for sure. On Frederick's enlistment he gives his parents' names as Alexander BEATTIE and Margaret MILLER. He states that he was 19 years, making his DOB 1827 or 28. He also states that his place of birth was "Parish of Killaghtee in or near the town of Hollybrook in the County of Donegal". His occupation is given as Labourer. Well, extensive searches on the net, by mail and in person have failed to find any record of his birth or of his parents' births, deaths, marriage or of them ever having lived in that area. Mmmmm. There is also an adress for Alexander and Margaret of No 1 Albert Place, Brandon Street, Malworth, London. I am not sure what date this address relates to or the accuracy of it, though. So, what is the theory. Did he change his name? If so, I can only think that I might as well give up now. On the other hand, it has also been suggested that Alexander and Margaret may have moved from Scotland as many apparently did in the late 1700s early 1800s, and may then have moved to England, and so were not born, married or died in the area. Well, there it is. If you have any ideas where I can chase more ghosts, or if you have any information that might help, I would love to hear from you. TIA Regards, Jenny in (mostly) sunny Central Queensland
Hello other Murray researchers especially County Fermanagh Murray researchers - hoping someone can connect to my Charles & Susan (Shannon) Murray (married Kesh) who emigrated from Fermanagh to Australia in 1838, arriving Sydney NSW 11 March 1839. They were accompanied on the Barque "Susan" by their six children: James, Phillip, Elinor, Mary, Charles & Margaret. - My research found Murrays and Shannons living mid 1830s at Aghinver, near Kesh Co Fermanagh IRE. Charles' father was James; mother Ellen McGoldrick (or McGoldrich). Family history relates the family originally were from Scotland - probably Plantation Scots. They went first to Garden Hill, Wollongong NSW and then settled eventually at Yatte Yattah near Milton on the NSW South Coast. Regards Joan Dawes [Email: [email protected]]
Hello Lorrae, Single Irish girls of the 'working class' with no family to support them were often classified as "pauper" by the parish council of their home town and rather than support them or go to the Workhouse the councils found it cheaper to pay the fare to remove them to another country. The life of an Irish girl in the mid 1800's was not good, and the opportunity to improve their staus by migrating to another country was often seen as 'a good deal' for some of the girls. In the Irish countryside they were expected to help in the field with the men, turf cutting, planting, cultivating, harvesting the grain and lifting the potatoes. All this plus bearing and raising the children, cooking, cleaning, sweeping the yard, milking the cows, feeding the animals and growing the vegetables and very few men would help with the women's work On the whole Irish women, at that time, were considered to be inferior to men and life expectancy for Irish country women was not good, so, a new country a new life and a possible marriage to a 'self sufficient farmer looked very good. The foundling hospitals and workhouses sent several thousand girls to Australia. Some records of these institutions have survived so if you think your 'Irish Lass' was one of these girls an enquiry at the record office of the relevant county in Ireland will tell you if the records are available. On arrival most were indentured as apprentices or domestic servants, some as house servants and the uneducated mostly as 'yard servants', kitchen maid or something similar. Many were ill treated by their employers. The government might move some into the country areas as servants or prospective wives for the isolated farmers. An interesting book to look for in the local family history library is "From Shamrock to Wattle" by Trevor McClaughlin, chapter 5 gives an explanation about the small amount of records available in the NSW Archives, most of which covers the period 1848-1851 only. Another study by Trevor McClaughlin is called "Barefoot and pregnant? Irish Famine ophans in Australia" published by the Genealogical Society of Victoria in 1991, a copy of which is held in the NSW Mitchell Library. It contains an index of orphans who arrived 1848-1850 giving details about native place, parents, relatives in the colony and if indentured. Hi every-one I am hoping that there is some-one who can tell me why so many boat loads of unmarried lasses (of marriagable age) migrated to this country on their own, please? I have TWO female ancestors with no other family in this country, who arrived via boat, and married some after arrival. I have been unable to find out what they did on their arrival to fill the short gaps. Jane SMART born 1852 by shipping records and details reported on the birth certificates of her children; or 1856 in Lyneham, Wiltshire, England, UK if the records from Catherine House are the correct ones. She lived in Ireland and then arrived on the "LANDSBOROUGH" which departed London 15 Jul 1873 and arrived Rockhampton 24 Oct 1873. Jane married Michael MADDEN on 23 March 1874, and her first child was born 28 July 1874 under her maiden name. Pregnant either at end of boat trip or soon after arrival!!!! No other known family in Australia at that time. Does anyone have the shipping records for that trip of the "LANDSBOROUGH" to check for other single lasses? Mary Jane DAVISON was born 27 August 1852 in County Dury, Ireland. She was the daughter of Alexander and Jane Davison. She arrived in Rockhampton approx 1877, (said to have married directly after arriving). Mary Jane married in Springsure, Qld on 20 April 1877. Again, no known family in this country at that time. So, my question, why where the single lasses coming to this country in the 1870's, well after the potato famine???
