Am seeking descendants of my Irish ancestors - list of names at end of this message. I have two different families by the name of Power, and am trying to find if there is any family link between the two. However, one line is proving very difficult to research, as they appear to have arrived in Queensland, but I have been unable to find their names in the list of Assisted Immigrants to Queensland, and have so far been unsuccessful in finding the name on passenger lists. >From details on his Death Certificate, Denis Power, a native of Tipperary, appears to have arrived in Australia about 1863, at the age of approx. 19. He married Mary Ellen McClelland on 21 July 1867 at St Mary's Catholic Church in Ipswich. Details on the Church Register give his parents as Patrick Power, a farmer, and Ellen O'Bryan. Also included in the Church Register is a marriage between Edmund Power and Catherine Halpin. This took place in 1865, and details of Edmund's parents are exactly the same as that for Denis, so I am hoping they are brothers, and that I'll be able to find proof of this. Other families being researched are - FLOOD - Thomas and Margaret (Templemore - Moruya NSW S.Coast areas) QUINN - Michael and Elizabeth (FLOOD) - (Templemore - Moruya, Sydney) - William and Margaret (POWER) - (Broulee/Moruya, New England, Clarencetown/Dungog areas) POWER - Denis and Mary (McCLELLAND) - Ireland - Queensland Darling Downs area Any details or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards, Maureen.

Hello Listers, I will greatly appreciate any help regarding my maternal g g grandparents FINN, John and his wife Mary (nee GORMAN), who emigrated to Australia aboard the good ship "Kate" in 1851. His parents names were Tim/Ellen FINN, her parents were Michael/Johanna GORMAN. Thanks and good luck. Errol Robinson.
Hi looking for BLAIRS or McClellandsTyrone from early1800s. Thanks Jim
This is a new listing. I am seeking any information on AND contact with the descendants of my g.g. grandfather, Henry Francis H HARRISON (occupation: Draper) and his wife Marrion WOOD, who most likely were married in Ireland (possibly as early as 1844) and seem to come out to Australia at the time of the Irish Famine. Marrion's death certificate (died 14.10.1888, aged 62) lists one extra child (Henrietta) who does not have a birth record in NSW. It lists Marrion's father as Thomas WOOD, farmer, and gives her birth place as Ireland and that she married her first husband in Ireland. I can find no death or marriage in NSW for Henrietta either - the only mention is on her mother's death certificate - the informant was Marrion's son-in-law, Francis HEATON (see below), so his wife, Annie, should know. I cannot find a death record for Henry F H Harrison, her first husband. In 1866, Marrion married John AIRD - she is listed as a widow on the certificate - they had no children. I can find no record of the Harrison's arrival in Australia, and so assume they did not come as convicts, but need information on their ship and when they arrived. In NSW, they had a further 7 children: Henry C born 1854 died 1854 as an infant Francis J born 1855 M. 1878 Sarah HARDING Robert J born 1857 M. Eliza Ellen FOSTER Thomas born 1859 M. ??? Marrion G E born 1861 in Woolloomooloo M. 1881 Benjamin JONES Rebecca M J born 1861 (twins) M. 1883 Henry J SHERRINGHAM Ann A (Annie Alexander) born 1863 M. 1882 Francis William HEATON I am descended from Marrion G E and Benjamin JONES (his second marriage). With the last child born in 1863 and Marrion's re-marrying as a 'widow' in 1866, I assume that either Henry F H Harrison died between 1862 and 1866 or he deserted his family, and Marrion re-married bigamously to support her family. Either way, how do I find out when and where he died? - so I can get a certificate in the hope of finding out who his parents were. Also, how do I find out when and how they both arrived in Australia? - together or separately, as they do not appear to be convicts or assisted immigrants from my preliminary checks. Are there any Musters/Censuses which would be relevant to their period - 1844 and beyond? Sorry about the length but I have given you everything I know to get the best feedback. Any help will be gratefully received. Thanks Margaret Szalay Sydney NSW [email protected]
Hello list As a new subscriber I was thrilled that in the first mailing I found information that I had been looking for over the last few years. I am now looking for further information on my gggrandmother Sarah Murphy who arrived in Sydney alone in 1850 on the 'Maria"aged 16. Her shipping records show that she was a nursemaid but gives no other info other than her father was Thomas Murphy and mother unknown. I would like to find out if she was in fact an orphan and where she came from. She is not listed anywhere on convict records. She may have travelled with a family as a nursemaid but I can't find anything on this. Does anyone know if the 'Maria' only brought the Irish orphans? or if the passengers were mixed? Is there anyone out there researching the 'Maria'? Sarah married James Cunningham in 1856 but the marriage record gives nothing other than her 'mark'. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Regards Margaret
yes please - I have a Francis Kilpatrick who married in Sydney in 1856. Can't find a birth for him, he isn't on the convict lists, and he isn't on the assisted migrant lists. I got the marriage certificate but it has no extra information. Apparently he was from Ireland - I'm going to get his death certificate, but would love to know where he came from and how he got here. Karen & List I am not sure if you would need to get permission from St. Mary's before starting your dbase, but would think if wise to enquire especially if people are using the registers from St. Mary's to give you the information. The Marriage Registers of the churches are their property and not State Records. Registers of Catholic Churches are known as sacramental registers and not the ones that the State requires all celebrants to keep. Also contact Judy Webster in Qld, to see if anyone else has or is working on such a dbase. http://www.judywebster.gil.com.au/ and look under Central Register of Indexing Projects in Australia and Specialist Indexing Projects in Australia - Genealogist's Guide. There is another marriage witness index relating to all Australasian records, started by a Hugh Winter in NZ http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~hughw/ My cousin has an index started of witnesses to marriages at St. Mary's, most relating to our family who came from Castletownarra, but as he is constructing it for our own use I don't think he would be willing to share but I will write him and let him know about it and he can then make a decision. We have had problems in the past with people using our information and not acknowledging our contribution. Karen, have you been in contact with the Irish Orphan Commemorative Committee, or with Terrie Pollard who publishes a quarterly magazine, "Clann an Ghorta". In that magazine is a list of people who are keeping details and some constructing dbases on the girls, including the names of descendants, quite a few members are concentrating on the ships our ancestors came on. The intention is to make the dbase available at Hyde Park Barracks. Trevor McLaughlin's new edition of Barefoot & Pregnant should be available by now. Contact the Genealogical Society of Victoria Level 6 179 Queen Street, MELBOURNE 3000 Ph: 03 9670 7033 Fax: 03 9670 4490 or [email protected] Please email me privately if you would like more information and names & addresses of the ship's contacts. bfn Maggie K M Keely Heffernan in Coffs Harbour, NSW, AUSTRALIA researching: BUCKLEY, HEFFERNAN, HERRICK, MALONE, SEYMOUR, TIERNEY from Tip. Hi Margaret & AUS-IRISH List Your email was reposted onto the Aus-Irish site. I have close links with a few of the Irish Orphan Girls - my maternal grandfather's sister, Mary SEYMORE/SEYMOUR came on the "Maria" in 1850, my husband's great grandmother, Ellen LORDON, arrived in 1850 on the "John Knox". A magazine is produced quarterly by Terrie Pollard who until recently lived in Sydney but now is Tasmania - her address is Terrie Pollard 'Killaveney' 2021 Sheffield Road SHEFFIELD TAS. 7306 POLLARD, Terrie E-mail Address(es): [email protected] The magazine is called 'Clann an Ghorta'. In the latest issue Tom Power, the chairman of the Irish Orphan Girls Commemorative Memorial Committee (I think that is the correct name) mentions changing the website address in November. Tom can be contacted on 02 9417 4193 or [email protected] There are contacts for some of the ships namely, Diadem, Digby, Earl Grey, Inchinnan, John Knox, Lady Peel, Maria, Pemberton, Thomas Arbuthnot & William & Mary. If you know of a connection to one of the Irish Orphan girls who came on one of the above ships, email me and I will give you the address of the contact. Other information in the last issue is a note from Trevor McClaughlin that a flyer advertising the new edition of Barefoot & Pregnant should be in the GSV magazine 'Ancestor' October edition. If you are interested in purchasing this book either write to the Genealogical Society of Victoria Level 6 179 Queen Street, MELBOURNE 3000 Ph: 03 9670 7033 Fax: 03 9670 4490 or [email protected] On the last 2 pages there were some photos taken of the Famine memorial on Custom House Quay in Dublin. The memorial is a group of life-size bronze sculptures of famine victims who went to Canada and Australia, the sculptures are by Rowan Gillespie, who said at the opening of the memorial "I feel this sculpture is not complete until the figures are crossing a sea of names, names cast in bronze and set in the cobble surround, thousands of names, names of those who have pledged to care." The Irish Famine Commemoration Committee aims to raise funds to aid the disadvantaged youth of Ireland today by donations from the descendants of those who emigrated as a result of the famine. There are few bronze plaques there already, one to honour the emigrants to Canada. Perhaps the descendants of Australian orphan girls may wish to be involved in this project. Details are on the net at: http://www.irishfaminefund (the above address may not be correct, but has been transcribed exactly as printed in the magazine.) The photos in the magazine are haunting, 4 males & 2 females, adults, because the photos have been photocopied not very distinct, I can't see if the women are holding babies or their possession in their arms. The photos were taken by a descendant of Mary Dunphy of County Laois. Hi List, I've decided to make a bit of a start on this. I need to build a database, but I can still capture the information in the interim. My aim will be to assist people with lookups (so hopefully I'll get a few more entries). Not sure if I need to seek permission form St Mary's Cathedral? Could anyone advise? Actually - does anyone know if this has already been done? In the meantime, below is the kind of detail that I think would be worth capturing. If you are not sure whether your ancestor was an orphan - but they did get married at St Mary's Cathedral - send me the data anyway. Core Information relating to Marriage at St, Mary's Cathedral, Sydney 1. Date Of Marriage 2. Husband's Name 3. Wife's Name 3.a Irish Orphan (Yes/No/Unsure) 4. Name of Witness 1 5. Name of Witness 2 6. Record Source (ie.Certificate/Transcription/Parish Register) 7. Record Reference (ie.Folio Number) 8. Record Provider (ie your name) 9. Your Contact Details (email address will suffice - so that I can forward to you any subsequent enquiries from an interested party) Supplementary Information if Available 1.Wife Details a.Ship of Arrival b.Date of Arrival c.Native Place of Birth 2. Husband Details a.Ship of Arrival b.Date of Arrival c.Native Place of Birth. Email me off list if you would like to contribute. Cheers, Karen

Hello Seeking descendants of John O'Brien (Brien) of Clogheen Co.Tipperary or thereabouts, was in Australia by 1866. His name is mentioned in some letters I have which were written in the 1860s by John Glasheen of New York formerly of Clogheen, Cahir, Ballylooby area. John O'Brien may have arrived at Sydney in 1863 aboard 'The Peerless'. He may have been the brother of Patrick who arrived at Sydney in 1856 aboard 'The David McIver'. Cheers Mick Dowling

James, Margaret I have an Irish Orphan in my line who arrived on the Lady Peel in 1849. She got married in 1852 at St Mary's Cathedral like it seems so many of the other orphans did. I have been toying with the idea of setting up a database to record the Irish/St Mary's Cathedral weddings, mainly for the purpose of capturing the names of the marriage witnesses. I am sure that one of the witnesses at my ancestors marriage came out on the same ship in 1849. Might be a good way to cross reference. I would need listers to supply the details from the certificates or transcriptions held to date. Would anyone be interested in this?
