Hi, Just a note to bring to your attention, the Milne Bay Military Museum, originally HQ for 11th Light Horse, Toowoomba, then the headquarters of the 25th Battalion, The Darling Downs Regiment, now will undertake family research of your ancestor if he/she served in either of the two great wars we didn't have to have. You will need the serial number of the person and his/her name for them to send for the details. They do not have them on site but can get them from the Archives for us, (saves a bit of paper work on our behalf). There is a small fee involved. Please contact the Museum at P.O. Box 94, Toowoomba, Qld, 4350, for more details.......PS I have no connection with the Museum, but think it is lousy, that they are having some much trouble with government red tape. They are attempting to stage a re-inactment to mark the 60th anniversary of the march our troops made from Cabarlah to Spring Bluff to catch the train to Brisbane and from there to " hell's entrance" - the war back in 1942 but getting nowhere from all levels of government, and the local defence forces in so far as co-operation etc and promotion, so I'm told. Cheers Jim
Hi Jan, My grandmother Mary Emilia Kenny arrived in Brisbane, Queensland C1900. Place of birth given on her marriage certificate was Dublin, but one of the few anecdotal references also mentions Co. Cork, so who knows? She appears to have come alone, and doesn't appear to have connected up with any family here. Father's name was John Kenny, engineer, and mo. was Norah Shanahan. Hope to hear more. Thanks, Leith ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jan Fortado" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, January 23, 2002 3:27 AM Subject: [AUS-IRISH] Kenny/Kenney in Australia > I am in touch with one family whose Kennys went from Ireland to Australia. > We could be connected. Hi all I am requesting help with my grandmother's step-father, please. Elizabeth MADDEN (Bessie) was married to William Henry MALLYON. After his death in 1940, she married Frank SMITH on the 5 June 1942 in Rockhampton. >From the marriage certificate, Frank was born in Town March, Cambridge Shire, England, UK on the 19May1869. He was the son of Abraham SMITH and Sarah CHANDLER. He was a widower with several children. His first wife may have had the maiden name of SCHNEIDER and I know he had at least one son, Frank SMITH. Does this ring a bell with anyone please? When I get the chance, I will visit the library and check out SMITH deaths leading up to 1942 for a Mrs SMITH whose father was a SCHNEIDER, and possibly births from the 1890's onwards. I do not know his arrival in Australia. I am very close to finishing a book on Michael MADDEN's family, and I do not know very much on this son-in-law. Thank you Lorrae Johnson Plainland Qld 4341 http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=helmrich Researching: 5. MADDEN, Coghlane, Burke, - Ireland 1863 - Qld Aust. Hello Looking for descendants of Patrick Looby and Mary Scanlon of the Clogheen area of Tipperary. Mary was born about 1825 her mothers name was Mary Dooling (Dowling) who was born in 1799. Patrick and Mary had children Johanna, Ellen, Alice and William. The children all emigrated to the Lancefield area of Victoria Australia. Johanna Looby married Patrick Ryan. Their children were Margaret, Ellen, Johanna, Lucy (Mrs Galvin, died in 1963), Patrick, Annie, Alice, Frances (Mrs Frigard, died in 1969), William, and Leo. Leo died at age 90 or so, about 10 years ago and is buried in Lancefield cemetery. Ellen Looby married a Glen or Glynn. This family ran a pub (Star of the West?) in Geelong Victoria for many years. Alice Looby remained unmarried. William Looby married. 2 children. A daughter became a nun, Sr.Brendan and I believe she died in 1957. The other child married a Hayden. Much information to share. I'm only subscribing to the Ryan list for a couple of days, so please reply to both the list address and my address ([email protected]). Cheers Mick Dowling Melbourne Australia
**COUNCIL OF IRISH GENEALOGICAL ORGANISATIONS** EXPLORING IRISH GENEALOGY # NO 2 IRISH CIVIL REGISTRATION WHERE DO I START ? Compiled by Eileen M. Ó Dúill & Steven C. ffeary-Smyrl The Council of Irish Genealogical Organisations announces the second in its series Exploring Irish Genealogy, which is entitled IRISH CIVIL REGISTRATION - WHERE DO I START ? As the title suggests, its subject is the understanding, locating and using of Irish civil registration records (the vital records of birth, death and marriage held by the Irish General Register Offices in Dublin and Belfast [GRO] ). The authors, Eileen M. Ó Dúill and Steven C. ffeary-Smyrl, both members of the Association of Professional Genealogists in Ireland, guide the reader through the historical background of Irish (civil) registration. Beginning with the Public Register maintained by the Irish (Anglican) Church in the early seventeenth century, they eventually move on to deal with the Non-Conformist marriage controversy of the 1830/40s that was the eventual spark that led to Irish civil registration beginning in April 1845. Running to eighty pages, this publication will prove to be an eye opener even to the inveterate researcher. Subjects covered are how to use and understand the GRO indexes; what information is recorded in Irish birth, death and marriage records; tips about surname and first name usage; registration through the Irish language; understanding conflicting dates of birth and baptism; using the 1911 Irish census returns in conjunction with GRO records; the under-used source of non-Catholic Marriage Notice Books; late registration, non-registration & omissions; adoption; births & deaths at sea; (British) army births, deaths & marriages; Great War deaths; Boer War deaths; the Schulze register; local registration offices; civil registration in Northern Ireland; placenames & addresses; and the Irish civil registration holdings of the LDS (Mormon) church. Apart from including a full list, arranged by county, of all the Superintendent Registrars' Districts (including their component Regi! strars' Districts), it also includes the full address and phone number of all the local registration offices throughout the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
