Hi All, On another list, a lister mentioned the Burke's Irish Family Records, does any one know what this book is and if that is the correct name for it? Also where it can be viewed, I live in South Aust. Hoping sks can please put me on the right track. I am researching the following Irish names MCCARTHY, REYNOLDS, McMAHON, OCONNOR, FRANCIS and ODONOGHUE. The McCarthy's were from County Clare Ireland the Parish of Kilfenora, Ennis.George McCarthy b abt 1841-1842 married 14-2-1863 at the above parish married Mary OConnor, he had two sisters that I know of that came to S.A. before George. Mary married Thomas Reynolds and Bridget married Patrick McMahon. George may have been the son of Michael McCarthy? and if he had any other sisters or brothers I have no idea. George and Mary and 8 of their 10 children ( 2 died in Ireland as babies) arrived Pt Adelaide on 3-10-1880 on the ship the "CORONA" and they resided in the Pekina District of S.A. as did Mary, Thomas Reynolds and Bridget and Patrick McMahon. I would love to hear from anyone that may be connected to my George, Mary and Bridget mainly as having ancestors that could be their siblings. With many thanks, Judy of S.A.

Hi Judy THis book is available in the Reference sections of most libraries. It contains info on various families from Ireland. It doesn't contain all family names though, so don't be disappointed if yours are not in it. I only have one name that I am researching that appears in it. As far as I know, it was published in 1958 and again in 1976. Don't know when the next edition is scheduled. Some of the info in it has been sent to them by various researchers around the world. Hi Charmaine Very little is known of Mary MELIA, certainly even less is known of her arrival in the colony. The first record of her is at the birth of her second child, Bedelia, known as Delia. I t is believed that she arrived with Thomas McGUIRE and that their first child was born enroute. It is recorded that she was one of the first free white women in the settlement of Moreton Bay. She was also from Ireland. Hello Sally, We corresponded years ago, about my great grandfather David O'Brien, probably born in Co. Wicklow, about 1850, presumably swam here. His parents were Henry O'Brien and Mary Miller. When he got here, he immediately teamed up with the big O'Toole migrant family from Wicklow. Someone has handwritten on the back of a certificate "Meeting of the Waters"/ Avoca, and I guess that could apply to his birth place. He married an O'Toole descendant, worked as a quarryman at Pyrmont and died of TB. he named his sons henry, francis and thomas, and his daughter mary. Have you any more ideas about him? Hi cousins I'm looking for more facts about my very-recently discovered famine orphan, Winifred Mary Minnie Callaghan. She arrived in Australia on the Maria in 1850, aged 14, married Richard Plummer Burgess in 1852, moved to NZ in 1855 or 56, and later, after being widowed, remarried and went back to Sydney. She probably has Burgess and Dyer descendants in Aus, and I'd like to know about them, BUT mainly I'd like to try to trace her place of origin, which for that shipload of girls was apparently southern or south-western Ireland. The name Callaghan is strongly connected to Cork and Kerry. Any suggestions very gratefully received Migs (Margaret) Eder New Zealand -- Quote: There is no problem which cannot be made worse, especially if people claim there's no problem. - Modern / Trad.
Dear Sally Are you talking about the Cornelius O'Brien, brother of Henry O'Brien who lived in the Yass area?, if so I have some information on him. You may find something on him on my web site www.webone.com.au/~sgrieves I also have other information as well, but I'm not connected to the O'Briens, the Grieves' worked on his property in Yass in the 1850's. In Search of Ireland, by H. V. Morton, published 1930, has this description of the emigration from Cobh, quoting earlier writers from almost a century before, which would have been when a lot of our ancestors were coming here. A few miles from Cork is the saddest spot in Ireland the port of Queenstown, known now as Cobh, which is pronounced as Cove. When I was there no Atlantic liner waited in deep water for the tenders to come out with the girls and boys who are leaving their country. But that is the characteristic sight of Queenstown. This place has heard, and will hear again, the keening of mothers lamenting as if for the dead. They say that in the last twenty-five years over three-quarters of a million young Irish men and women have gone away from this port. Queenstown is a wound which Ireland cannot staunch; and from it pours a constant stream of her best and youngest blood. I imagine from the accounts I have heard that the departure of an emigrant ship from Queenstown has not altered much since Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Hall described it in their weighty work Ireland nearly a century ago: We stood in the month of June on the quay at Cork to see some emigrants embark in one of the steamers for Falmouth, on the way to Australia. The band of exiles amounted to two hundred, and an immense crowd had gathered to bid them a long and last adieu. The scene was touching to a degree; it was impossible to witness it without heart-pain and tears. Mothers hung upon the necks of their athletic sons; young girls clung to elder sisters; fathers old white-headed men fell on their knees, with arms uplifted to heaven, imploring the protecting care of the Almighty on their departing children; Och, exclaimed one aged woman, alls gone from me in the wide world when youre gone! Sure you wor all I had left! of seven sons but you! Oh, Dennis, Dennis, never forget your mother your mother dont, avourneen your poor old mother, Dennis! And Dennis, a young man, though the sun was shining on his grey hair, supported his mother in his arms until she fainted, and then he lifted her into a small car that had conveyed his baggage to the vessel, and kissing a weeping young woman who had leaned against the horse, he said: Ill send home for you both, Peggy, in the rise of next year; and yell be child to her from this out, till then, and THEN, avourneen, youll be my own. When we looked again the young man was gone, and Peggy had wound her arms round the old woman, while another girl held a broken cup of water to her lips. Amid the din, the noise, the turmoil, the people pressing and rolling in vast masses towards the place of embarkation like the waves of the troubled sea, there were many such sad episodes. Men, old men too, embracing each other and crying like children. Several passed bearing most carefully little relics of their homes the branch of a favourite hawthorn tree, whose sweet blossoms and green leaves were already withered, or a bunch of meadowsweet. It is impossible to describe the final parting. Shrieks and prayers, blessings and lamentations mingled in one great cry from those on the quay, and those on shipboard, until a band stationed on the forecastle struck up St Patricks Day. Bate the brains out of the big drum, or yell not stifle the womens cries, said one of the sailors to the drummer . http://greetings.yahoo.com.au - Yahoo! Greetings - Send your Valentines love online.
I would be interested in hearing from anyone with connection to: Thomas McGUIRE, born c 1823 Kilglass, Ireland married Mary MELIA (1820-1899) The two counties of Roscommon and Longford both contain parishes named Kilglass. Nothing is known of his life until 16 Aug 1839 when he joined the 99th Regiment while it was stationed in Ireland at Kilkenny & Dublin. (The 99th Regiment wore red uniforms with yellow lapels - Red-coats). Regimental # 1261. Age - about 17 yrs. November 1841 - regiment commenced the process of transfer to NSW by moving to Clapham to await embarkation on the "JOHN BREWER" which departed Sheerness in December 1841 and arrived Sydney on 25 April 1842 via Van Diemen's Land (9-16 April 1842), and Newcastle (19-23 April 1842). (Four women were on board). His name appears on the Moreton Bay Muster Roll for the end of May 1842. I know he had two daughters before his death on 11Jan1853 at Woodford, Qld, Aust. Hi Lorraine, Thanks for the extra details. If I ever get anywhere with this lot and happen to discover Cork connections, I'll let you know. As far as I'm aware Tom LEAHY had land in the Freestone district, but I can't find him in the civil records at all. I did have other rellies in Spring Hill, but from the other side of the family - STAFFORDs and CUSACK/O'NEILLs. Thanks again, Jo ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lorraine Egan" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, February 04, 2002 2:20 PM Subject: Re: [AUS-IRISH] LEAHY > > Hello Joanne My LEAHY's came from SCHULL, CORK.
