Hi Elaine I'm no expert, but from several e-mails I've read on this list, many Irish people travelled from their homeland to the mainland of Britain, whether specifically to "catch a boat", or perhaps to try to find work there, and afterwards "catching a boat" to another country. I've been given that advice myself in relation to one of our Irish families. Someone else on the list may be able to further enlighten you! Hello Listers Can anyone give me a brief history on Donnass, County Clare, Ireland. Where exactly is it located in Ireland, population around 1850/5, main employment base. Is there also somewhere I can look to give me a list of names in each house hold?, or perhaps an address of the local historian/historical society that I can write to. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help Tanya Gosford, NSW Australia
I realise that this is a shot in the dark, but wondered whether there were any listers living in and around Warrnambool, Victoria. Late last year I was delighted to track down Michael Gleeson, the long-lost brother of my maternal great-grandfather, Mathew Gleeson. My great-grandfather, Mathew Gleeson and his brothers Timothy and Thomas came out from Tipperary, Ireland in the late 1850's and settled first at Toowoomba on the Darling Downs and then took up land at Crow's Nest north east of Toowoomba. It had been rumoured in the family for ages that Michael another brother of Mathew Gleeson had also come out to Australia and was thought to have disembarked at Melbourne and settled in the Warrnambool district. As nothing had ever been done, to my knowledge, to follow this up I decided last year to look into the matter. Thanks to the Research Officer of the Warrnambool Family History Society I learned of a death record of a Michael Gleeson listed in the Victorian Federation Index of 1889-1901. He died on October 19, 1891 at age 59 years. The interesting news was that Michael's parents were Jas[James] Gleeson and Ann Costello the of my great-grandfather Mathew Gleeson. I had finally tracked down the long-lost brother. Further information from the Research Officer advised that Michael's wife was Bridget Darcy and that they had nine children. However six died as infants or a young age. The surviving children were: - Elizabeth Mary Gleeson born in 1857. Thomas William Gleeson born in 1861. John Joseph Gleeson born in 1869. Michael Gleson's death certificate shows that he died at his residence at Timor Street, Warrnambool. The informant for the death certificate was his son-in-law, J. J. Mooney, of Ballangeish. He probably was the husband of Elizabeth Mary Gleeson. I would love to be able to trace some of the descendents of Michael and Bridget Gleeson, Nee Darcy. If there are any Gleeson and Mooney listers from the Warrnambool area who may be related, I would be delighted to hear from them. Des Skelly Moorooka, Qld.

"Robert Glendenning GREGG, fell from favor of the Royal English Court. In May, 1886, he was tried, found guilty of Intrigue, and deported -- first to Brisbane, Australia and then ferried to a penal colony in New Zealand. To make a living for his wife (Isabella or Elizabeth) and three children, (Hannah, Robert, Harry). He qualified as a tailor working in a government shop. He made British service uniforms, and was soon promoted to overseer of the workplace." Quote from Aunt. Went to Australia bet 1884 and 1886. Came to US about 1895 or 1896. One of these trips was aboard the Chimborazo. Would welcome copy of any passenger lists. Don't know how he made the other trip. Any help would sure be appreciated: _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your e-mail with MSN 8. Hello Listers Daniel Joseph Keane married Elizabeth Hegarty/Hagerty in 1879. His birthplace was Co Clare; hers was Lancefield, Vic. They settled in Nhill. May was born in 1880, Eva Constance in 1882, William Michael in 1885, Eileen Anita in 1887, and Francis Esmonde in 1889. There may have been other children. Eva Constance become Sr Agnes in the Congregation of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, William Michael joined the Jesuits and I believe Francis Esmonde became a Collins St. specialist. Eileen had died in 1888. Does any of this sound familiar? Would love to make contact if it does. Regards Lorraine Vass Wyrallah, Northern NSW
