Hi Lorraine, The earliest years of civil registration (births) are on-line on the IGI and some of the subsequent years (roughly during the 1870s) are on the British Vital Records CDs (of course Version 2 has more years than version 1), but as far as I am aware, the only way is still to trawl through the index films at the LDS. This makes it very difficult to do a general search across a range of years for different members of a family, so if anyone knows a better way of doing it in Australia, I would love to know too! Hi Lorraine I have the 2nd Edition BVRI and Kings Co starts at 1867 - there are 59 records for Corcoran and 62 for Doolan. It seems that the marriages may start at 1850 - there are 3 for Doolan and none for Corcoran or Korcoran. The TV program "In Search of Ancient Ireland" has been showing on SBS TV in NSW Australia (and possibly elsewhere) at 7.30 pm Sundays for the last 2 weeks with 1 more program to show. There is an interesting web site about the program at www.pbs.org/wnet/ancientireland that is well worth visiting. Hope that you enjoy. Regards, Peter
Hi Diane... One of the better ones that I used although it is not complete was a site by Lesley Uebel. The address is http://users.bigpond.net.au/convicts/page4.html It gives you the place and date of arrival, ships name and the native place of the orphans. Some other general Irish sites for you to try: http://names.local.ie/ www.amitar.com.au/~deel/westlist.htm www.cimorelli.com/ireland.finfname www.irishclans.com/surname/ www.irishroots.net www.users.on.net/proformat/irlnames Hope this helps... Let me know if you can't access any of these websites... It has been over 12 months since I have used them. Hi Diane, You connection with Kilfearagh, Clare has attracted my attention. I may be able to assist as I have connection with the area. Liza There is a memorial to all the famine orphans at the Hyde Park Barracks which contains all the names of those famine orphans who came to Aus.. Sadly some names have faded with the elements although the monument is only a couple of years old... Do you have a year in which your Annie arrived? There are several publications and a large group of famine descendants who meet at the Hyde Park Barracks on an irregular basis for various functions.. There is a publication called Clann an Ghorta which is devoted to the Irish famine orphans and their descendants who contribute to the publication from time to time... It may be worth the time to contact the co-ordinator of the magazine .. and place an ad for descendants of your Annie.. This has to be the most wonderful RC parish web site I have ever seen...........and so says Jane Lyons from another list. I would have to agree! http://www.lmi.utvinternet.com/index.htm dedicated in 1873........... It's got marriages - baptisms - gravestones.......... Does anyone know where it is - which townlands it was created from - which parishes those townlands came from? Or...........does anyone have an email address to contact this parish - does anyone know how their message board works......... Please sned all queries via the list and NOT direct to me. Michael, Thank you for that, your experience with the manifests of several ships gives me some confidence. All that I need to know now is how and why they came via Glasgow, surely a long way from Derrygonnelly, Co. Fermanagh. Do you have any spare Cassidys around? My grandmother was a Susan Cassidy. According to her marriage certificate she was from Derrygonnelly also, her father was a Samuel Cassidy, a "Valuator" in Ireland and her mother was a Margaret Hutton. Can't find any sign of any of them. Can't even find how Susan came to Australia. Family lore says that she came a maid to a Medical Doctor and family to Melbourne, but every family story so far has been shown to be a figment of someone's imagination, probably my Irish grandfather who undoubtedly had the "gift of the gab". :-) Regards, Peter ----- Original Message ----- From: "Michael Cassidy" <cassidy@panix.com> To: "Peter Dolan" <dolan@pnc.com.au> Cc: <Y-IRL@yahoogroups.com>; "AUS-IRISH" <AUS-IRISH-L@rootsweb.com>; "Donegal" <DONEGALEIRE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, March 13, 2003 3:22 AM Subject: Re: [Y-IRL] Re: [DONEGAL] Irish ports - Moville > At 9:43 AM +1100 3/11/03, Peter Dolan wrote: > >The idea of ships leaving Glasgow, picking up passengers at Moville/Lough > >Foyle raises the question of what the ship's manifest would have shown as > >their point of embarkation, Glasgow(Greenock) of Moville (Lough Foyle) or > >??? > My cassidy came in 1871 and did all the stops.
