A tip if you can't find your ancestor's entry - the registers may be held and indexed in another State. I found my grandfather's entry into Australia after giving up twenty years ago. My daughter and I had spent many hours at the NSW State Archives looking. We had been told that the family had arrived in Sydney on the 'Orient'. Eventually we were told at the archives that 'they had probably arrived in steerage' and that steerage passengers' names were not recorded and that our only hope was to look in the newspapers of the day. Recently and by accident, I found that the 'Orient' was included in the wonderful microfiche series of Shipping & Immigration into Victoria put out by the PRO of Victoria. The full registers of the Orient are there - all the passengers disembarking in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney. Happy hunting, Maureen
