I don't know if my message landed in email boxes when people were away or just busy, but, most unusually, I received no answer whatsoever. Perhaps the answer is that no resource exists, but I would be most grateful to be told that if so, as it would clear out one line of research conclusively. Many thanks. "I am hoping that the skills and resourcefulness of the Group members will be able to help me track down the ship in which the COMLEY family arrived in Adelaide between May 1883 and November 1884. I have seen advice given on other States but not for SA. Are there any indexes to such a situation, please? The full family comprised, Charles Albert COMLEY (Head) Sarah Ann, his wife Charles Herbert aged 10-11, his son Reginald aged 7-8, son Ida Emily aged 5-6, daughter Edith May, aged 0-1, daughter" In hope again... Hi Listers For the benefit of Newbies (me) and other strangers to this land (Peter), could someone please tell us whether or not we can search by surname in SA shipping arrivals...? It appears from looking at the Archives of SA website http://www.archives.sa.gov.au/readingroom/advice/plistsin.html and from the South Australian Genealogy & Heraldry Society webste http://www.saghs.org.au/shipping.htm that we can only search alphabetically by name of ship. Is this a correct observation? Is there any other way to do a free search online by surname of the passenger? Extract from SAGHS website about the shipping records: SHIPPING ARRIVALS Databases | Deaths & Burials | SA Shipping Arrivals | SA Places | Place Codes | Library Catalogue | Journals A | B | C | D | E | F | G | H | IJ | K | L | M | N | OPQ | R | S | T | UV | W | XYZ Formerly known as Source 313 and now GRG35/48a this section lists the vessels whose records survive in some form from 1836 to 1886. The number of voyages with surviving records number just 749 and the material available for each list varies considerably. The material you do locate may include any of the following: An embarkation list prepared by the agent or emigration agents. A passenger manifest prepared by the captain. Certificate of arrival prepared by the immigration officials. Sundry lists created for other purposes such as fee-payers, land-holders. Hint: Read the first page header of the shipping list carefully to determine what you are looking at! Problems include: Survival rate of lists is poor. Lists may not be a true indication of the immigrants who actually arrived Writing is often difficult to decipher. Useful information on origins is rare. Teenagers in families are split off and listed under the unmarried passengers. Departure and arrival date may vary from record to record. Fee paying passengers usually not recorded. Crew never recorded except in manifests. I am SO glad most of my relatives had the good sense to come to Victoria...! LOL!
