    1. Immigration Depots
    2. Dear Listers I have found these 2 works very useful in understanding the migrants experience both awaiting the voyage out and the arrival Pescod, Keith Good Food, Bright Fires and Civility: British emigrant depots of the 19th century 2001) details the process of emigration from Britain to Australia under the organisation of the British Colonial Office in the mid -nineteenth century. Extracts from emigrants' diaries describe their final days in the depots before departure, and official correspondence reveals British government attitudes of the time regarding the emigration schemes. Pescod, Keith A place to lay my head : immigrant shelters of nineteenth century Victoria [2003) explores the nature of the austere immigration depots in Victoria where immigrants found temporary shelter. The gold rushes put added pressure on the accommodation resulting in both government and private buildings.Regards Marilyn

    3. Think I may have jumped to a conclusion??? Hopping someone might help me find, information for births at sea. My Great Gand Parents, Joseph and Elizabeth BELL, arrived Australia, on the 6 Jan, 1855 aboard the Ebba Brah .I had guessed there first child Sarah Ella born/died 1855, was born on the voyage over.(a still birth???) Maybe I am wrong here. Might Sarah been born, before they left Bristol, and died on the voyage. If so, where would I look for a record of her birth. Also her death date. Was told it was 5th jan 1855, a day before reaching port.If this info is correct. Was her tiny body buried at sea, or buried upon arrival. Seeing it was so close. Any help would be welcomed. 3. Pegg, The Marine Index shows a that Sarah Bell was born aboard the NELEUS to Joshua BELL and Mary Ann BOMWELL, registered number 168 in 1854. There are no other Sarah Bell's (B or D)on the index. 3. Hi Peggy, The only way to get more information would be to look at the reel no. given at the end of their entries. BELL Elizabeth 21 and husband Ebba Brahe 1855 2137, 2469 BELL Joseph 25 and wife Ebba Brahe 1855 2137, 2469 although there is entries along side of names which has dv = died on voyage, actually I have counted 15 deaths and 2 births on the voyage, may be more. http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/archives/search_1656.asp Kind regards, Lynne, Sydney ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peggy" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, November 01, 2005 4:11 PM Subject: [AUS-IMM-SHIPS] birth/death at sea > Think I may have jumped to a conclusion??? 3. Hi Lynne There were 2 BELL deaths on the voyage over. Sarah Ella, and her Aunt. I have lost the information on the Aunt (its in this room, somewhere, put away for "SAFE" keeping). Am unsure if she was Joseph's sister-in-law, or his Aunty Thank you ever so much for all your help.
