    3. Hello from Melbourne. I am looking for any assistance with my research. My Grandfather, Percy Harold Ryton BENSON was a ship's stoker in June 1907. My Grandmother and her family arrived in Brisbane on the '' Orotava'' in May 1908 and Percy was there to meet them. I have not found him in assisted or unassisted migrants lists, so possibly: He worked his passage here He "jumped" ship in Australia I have checked the NAA, no luck. Any other suggestions will be very welcome. I have all of his family in both UK and Queensland and all UK Census data. Cheers, Bob

    3. Hello Bob. I hope that you find Percy one of these days, as you've been looking for him for a long time. re: your suggestion that he may have 'jumped ship' - the old Police Gazettes in each state have entries regarding deserters in Australian ports. Have you plowed through these yet? They usually give a good description of the deserter. Often there was a reward offered for information leading to the arrest of these deserters. I don't have any Gazettes, but I have read them whilst trying to find my rellies and this could be an avenue you may want to try, if you haven't already. You might find them in either your State Archives or State Library. Good luck, and I hope that you'll let us all know when you do find your elusive Percy!
