Hi listers I am looking for help if possible for a John Moule (1845-1912) arriving in Oz prior to 1865 and came into South Australia via Victoria about 1865 where he entered the storekeeping trade in Saddleworth the only one I can find arrived on the Northam 9 Feb 1860 but he was 23 where as John was only 15 in that year. I believe he may have come in from the USA as he was taken there at an early age. It seems that he made quite a life for himself as he was an MP I believe from 1884-1896 there is an obituary in a newspaper called the Advertiser dated the 23 March 1912 which may shed some light on him but as yet I have not been able to trck it down. Any help would be much appreciated. thank you. Barry _________________________________________________________________ Feel like a local wherever you go. http://www.backofmyhand.com
G'day Barry, I can't help you with his shipping details but The Advertiser is the morning newspaper here in Adelaide. Saddleworth is a small country town 60 miles north of Adelaide. There are biographical details of John in the Observer of 8th August 1890 (page 33) and 27th March, 1893 (page 16) . The obituary in the Advertiser is on page 19. You should be able to get copies of those articles from the South Australian Archives. At one time John was Commissioner of Public Works under the Downer administration. This Sir John Downer was the ancestor of Alexander Downer this country's Foreign Minister (Foreign Secretary to you). John married in Manoora and he and Rachel had at least 8 children. I believe the former Moule store is now a museum. If you contact saddleworth.library@plain.sa.gov.au and admin@cgvc.sa.gov.au you may get some more information. The second address is the Clare and Gilbert Valley Council which includes the Saddleworth area Regards, Chris -----Original Message----- From: aus-immigration-ships-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-immigration-ships-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of barry hewitt Sent: Saturday, 27 October 2007 11:32 PM To: aus-immigration-ships@rootsweb.com Subject: [AUS-IMM-SHIPS] arrivals Hi listers I am looking for help if possible for a John Moule (1845-1912) arriving in Oz prior to 1865 and came into South Australia via Victoria about 1865 where he entered the storekeeping trade in Saddleworth the only one I can find arrived on the Northam 9 Feb 1860 but he was 23 where as John was only 15 in that year.
