Hi Sylvia I would look on the State Records of NSW website, a link to "Assisted Immigrants Arriving Sydney and Newcastle 1844-1859", use the search facility. There are listings for John Mitchell, no John Albert Mitchell, which would make it hard to know if one of the entries is your John Albert Mitchell and the ages may not fit, but it is worth a look. There is no listing for John Mitchell in "Unassisted Immigrants". I would apply for his Death Certificate or a transcript of his Death Certificate from one of the Transcription Agents. Death Certificates from the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths & Marriages cost $24.00 and a transcript would cost approx. $15.00. A Death Certificate would probably list where he was born and how long he had lived in "the Colony", but you would need to know approximately when he died and preferably where he died, because there is a long list of deaths of John Mitchell on the NSW Registry of BDM website. Another website to try is "Mariners and Ships in Australian Waters" http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/ Another website to check is "The Ships' List" at http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/passengerlists/ and search the "Australia Lists". I hope someone else has some ideas for you. Hello, All, Hoping for a little help here. I have a print out of our ancestor's "Certificate of Character" when he was employed as a Cook on the above ship. His name was John WILSON. It appears from the image (which is a photocopy and very faint) that the ship left Liverpool UK in Sep, 1852 and arrived on 2 Jun, 1853. Afraid I can't read any other details, but I'm wondering why the voyage took so long, when the usual time seems to have been about 3 months + or minus? I would greatly appreciate anything further SKS could tell me. Apparently John's wife and 2 small boys were on the ship as well. Would there be a Passenger List? I think they paid their way, but John decided to work as a cook. TIA, Carolyn. Bathurst.
