Prior to that there were a loose collection of Colonies who all kept their own records and had customs posts on their borders with other Colonies. Some kept records better than others . There was a concerted effort in the late 1860s to get rid of convict records so as 'to remove the taint' So over all we are lucky to have what records that have survived The Vic PRO has alot of arrival records on line, on fiche and I think I saw ref recently to a CD ?. NSW State Records has indexes to assisted arrivals 1844- 1896 on line and in books format in many libraries bye Marg Morters Member of Central Coast Family History Society GOSFORD NSW Australia
