People, My g.g.grandfather, Robert Salkeld CARRUTHERS arrived in Adelaide on board British Empire in 1850. He married Sarah NEWELL in Adelaide and they had a son in 1851. The family moved to Maitland in NSW between 1851 and 1853. Their second son was born in Maitland in 1853. How did they get from Adelaide to Maitland. I understand there is no listing of them in any shipping list. Would they have travelled by sea to Sydney and then by see to Morpeth? Any ideas??????? Dear Phillip Was the only way back then .Was a great deal of coastal shipping. There were regular ferry services between Morpeth and Sydney that started about 1830 with the ' William IV' and 'Sarah Jane' paddle wheel steamers and a third whose name escapes me Probably no passenger lists done so no records now of individuals...... On the off chance have you you checked Passkeys unassisted index of passenger arrivals to NSW 1842 - 1855 ?? . This may record the Adelaide - Sydney part but may not You could travel from Sydney to Maitland by road n the 1850s but this wasnt for the feint hearted Would they have travelled by sea to Sydney and then by see to Morpeth? > Sounds logical bye Marg Morters Member of Central Coast Family History Society GOSFORD NSW Australia
