Dear fellow listers, I have a conundrum and wonder whether anyone can help. My GGGrandfather Daniel McGraw left County Durham in 1841 with wife Margaret (nee Pinkney) and four children - eldest 10 and youngest 5 months - aboard the "Emerald Isle" which arrived in Sydney on 23 December 1841. They were listed in Newcastle in 1843, Daniel as a "Preacher and miner". A search of Bounty Immigrants turned up the death at sea of the baby, Jane Anne but no sign of the rest of them. Having spent a few hours at the Archives I found an anomaly. The ships manifest has 15 passengers and 140 Assisted Migrants, yet the entries of the Bounty Immigrants lists only 85. The report to the Colonial Secretary lists a number of people disallowed Bounty, but still no McGraw, and well short of the 140. There were no steerage passengers as such. Question: Is it possible that some of the Bounty Immigrants travelled on to Newcastle on the ship and were processed there? They would have arrived in January 1842. If so, are there any records in Newcastle? Any little piece of advice will be appreciated, as I am about to give up. Ron
