They came from Schleswig-Holstein, which was then part of Denmark - later Germany. It is of passing interest that Carl's grandson Ernst changed his name to BERT during the Great War, to avoid being labelled a "Hun", I guess - but cunningly baptised his daughter Yvonne! Gordon Barlow
