Meg G List Admin -----Original Message----- From: Dianne Randell [mailto:dirandell@optusnet.com.au] Sent: Wednesday, April 17, 2002 5:13 PM To: MegG Subject: John Cesar Godeffroy & Son - SOME German ships to Australia Meg You may be interested in this, also. My ancestors were on "La Rochelle", a German ship of John Cesar Godeffroy & Son that was quarantined in Brisbane - 1865/1866 journey. There was a big controversy at the time - newspaper articles, a petition by Toowoomba people, concern about the mortality on this voyage, an enquiry was held etc. Another German ship "Wandrahm" arriving Brisbane at the same time was also a cause of concern. To the point: As part of their argument that they had a very good record, and this particular incident was an aberration - scarlet fever, typhus, cholera were rampant on the continent and helped by the unusually hot whether, Messrs. Godeffroy & Son attached, in a letter to the Colonial Secretary's Office, Queensland, a list of prior successful voyages . The handwriting is a bit unclear at time. The first ship on the list is to Adelaide in the year 1850 and it finishes 1864. It would be an edited list for obvious reasons. It gives the name of the ship, the name of the Captain, the year, the place of destination, the number of passengers to embark and the number of passengers who died, specifying if adults and/or infants. Of this list, 17,920 embarked and 320 deaths, "chiefly infants" I want to make clear it is NOT a comprehensive list of German ships to Australia...but an edited list.
