    1. [AUS-IMM-SHIPS] Charles Spencer Deverall, Ship Therese?
    2. Sally Willmot
    3. Hello, I’m looking for Charles Spencer Deverall, believed to have been born in Wales,1808, who emigrated to Australia in 1860 or thereabouts, and settled in Victoria. I've been told the ship he came on was named Therese but have not found any record of a ship of this name. Can anyone give me any pointers please. I am aware that there was a Charles Deverall born 1811 in Manchester who was apparently transported, but I don't think this is the same person TIA I would be grateful for any help. Sally in N.Z. 3. Hi Michael, Well that's certainly very interesting. I must have a read of Gillian's book, and find out what happened to Zachariah Timms. Janet Turner, who arrived "Fairlie" 1848 married my gggrandfather, James Oakley in 1849. Thankyou very much for your reply, and sending my email on to Gillian Kelly. I hope she can tell me more about the "Fairlie" voyage and passengers, especially Janet. With regards your ancestors Henry Dewey and Ellen Kenny who settled at Rylstone- Janet Turner who married James Oakley also lived at Rylstone 1850's. James worked as a shepherd at Dabee. Where did Henry work? Kind regards, Susan, Central Coast NSW. 1. [AUS-IMM-SHIPS] Assisted Migrants-on Castle Eden
    2. taylor
    3. Hi List I have been following the "Fairlee" postings and found the suggested site on the Sydney General Trade List and Shipping Gazette very interesting and helpful. My GGGrandfather was on the "Castle Eden" and arrived October 1848 with his wife and children, 1 died on route. He was listed as a shepherd and they were assisted immigrants. Anyway my question is how do I find out who sponsored his migration to Australia? as his whereabouts from the time of arrival up until 1854 is unknown. I know that his wife, Jane had co-habitated with another man by the end of 1850 and was living in Dalby Qld and I think Alexander may have been in Qld prior to that and then the next record of him is in 1854 where he had a bigamist marriage to another in Maitland and then moving to Ginninderra Creek in the Yass area in which I assume he was still a shepherd and sometimes a gold digger. So I guess I am trying to find out if there is a list of people who sponsored the migrants for their fare and also if there is immigration list from NSW to Qld? Regards Sharon

    3. Susan Not sure if she subscribes to this list, but Gillian Kelly documented the Lacemakers who travelled to Oz, including the Fairlie occupants, in her book "Well-suited to the colony". Janet Turner warrants a brief mention, referring to her being pregnant on boarding and marrying Zachariah Timms shortly after arrival. Not much on the captain, I'm afraid. My ancestors Henry Dewey, from Calais, and Ellen Kenny, from Ireland, were on board, and married on arrival in Sydney, eventually settling near Rylstone. Gillian may have more info. 3. Hi Marg, Thanks for that. I had actually looked at that Fergusson Project site just recently and found that info re Fairlie. I have looked at "Fairlie" indent on microfilm at local library. Only wrote down ancestor's details, not of who other passengers were, which I must do one day. I've also found Sydney Morning Herald report of "Fairlie" arrival. However, having difficulty 100 percent confirming gggrandmother's origins in Scotland. So wondered if there would be a clue in anything re by or about captain and agent William Davis or Dr Wilkinson (who may have delivered her baby). Especially wondered, as Janet was an assisted immigrant, who would have sponsored her voyage, what role Captain Davis as agent, would have had, and if he had recorded anything about it where I might find it. Kind regards, Susan NSW. 3. Hello fellow researchers, I've tried sending mail to this list recently and messed it up a bit- sorry about that- will try again. I'm asking for assistance please from anyone knowing what part the captain, William Davis, would have played as also being "agent" for the ship "Fairlie" to NSW, 1848. My gggrandmother Janet Turner and baby arrived on Fairlie as assisted immigrants. Janet was 24, a dairymaid from Fifeshire, Scotland. She could read but not write, Presbyterian, single, no family in colony. A number of the passengers were young Irish orphan women from the Cork Foundling Hospital. Some other passengers were Calais embrioderers. Others were from England, skilled in a number of trades. Kind regards, Susan NSW.

    3. Hi Lynne, A big thankyou for your help re "Fairlie" records 1848. The Shipping Gazette site was interesting. Coincidentally I had browed that site tonight, but had overlooked the Fairlie entry, so was glad you directed me straight to it. I would have missed it. I notice it stated the "agent" was the captain, Davis. What does this mean do you know? Can anyone advise how I would find more out about Davis's activities as agent. I'd like to know what these agents did re finding the passengers in the first place. My gggrandmother Janet was from Scotland and was an "assisted immigrant"-not sure what that means either. How can I find out where they went to after leaving "Fairlie"? Suppose they would have gone to the Female Immigration Depot? Kind regards, Susan NSW.
