    1. [AUS-IMM-SHIPS] THANKS
    2. Carolyn and Darryl
    3. I am very grateful to you all. Thank you for responding ! Yes, I have written to several lists in the last few months. I was told I was on the wrong List! Sorry if I've bored you. I only have George SHEPHARD's Death Certificate. It said, to be brief that when he died in 1879 that he had been married for 25 years to Charlotte SHEPHARD and had been 20 years in N.S.W. The Informant was his wife Charlotte and his parents were listed as James SHEPHARD, Farmer and Sarah WINTERBOTTOM. Birth was "Yorkshire". He died on 7 Mar, 1879 and was buried on 19th Mar, 1879 (? bit of a gap: wonder why?) at Jumper's Flat (?) by Carl Asimus (acting undertaker) (He was Hannah Elizabeth SHEPHARD's husband) and the officiating minister was Wesleyan, by the name of W.C HUGHES. Witnesses were John NIGHTINGALE and Dominic ENGLISH, whom I think were related to him. I am tomorrow obtaining Charlotte's DC from Joy Murrin. I doubt that it will tell me anything different, though. Still.............one can hope!! Many thanks, Carolyn.

I have tried looking for their arrivals with no luck, so I didn't reply.I have been thinking about the problem since then. If the family story is true than they most likely would not have been recorded by the officials of the day! Other listers may disagree!!! This means that thye would not be on the records databases availble to us researchers. I feel it would be an idea to look at newspapers of the day to see if you can see if he advertised his ship for sale, he would have to have made some effort to sell it. I am sure that some are availblae on line but feel you made need to visit the Statae Library in Sydney . Do you know what it was called? Are there any early land records?? When do they start?? Hi all, Could anyone advise please how I can find out what happened to Fairlie passenger 1848 to Sydney, Zaccheus Timms, who shortly after arrival married another passenger, assisted immigrant Janet Turner, at St James Church of England church in Sydney? 3. Greetings, First posting to the List, so please excuse lack of knowledge and confusion. Ancestors named SHEPHARD (SHEPPARD / SHEPHERD) arrived in Australia (more than likely Sydney) in about 1859. They were George and Charlotte. Family story goes that George and Charlotte were married in England, sold everything and bought a ship in which they sailed to Australia with 2 little daughters, Hannah Elizabeth and Sarah Ann and baby Mary Jane was born at sea, supposedly in "abt 1860." They then sold the ship and bought a bullock and dray and travelled across the Blue Mountains to Rockley near Bathurst N.S.W. where they stayed and had a further 7 children from 1862. A researcher checked the 'supposed' marriage on 17 Apr, 1854, Derbyshire UK, but it certainly couldn't be found. (Family member's information.) 2 unnamed daughters were born at Bathurst in 1859 and 1861(to a George and Charlotte SHEPPARD), (Source: N.S.W. BMD). There is also a birth of a George SHEPHARD in Sydney in 1859 with just the mother's name of Charlotte. There is loads more...........................(for another posting.) I have tried every available source to find the possible name of the ship or a ship listing them as passengers, to no avail. Would anyone know where on earth I could look? When George came to Bathurst, he was a farmer. After he died in 1879, Charlotte is listed as a Landholder of over 1,300 acres at "Summerhill", Rockley in 1885. She died in 1916. As well, what would be the route of such a ship? Could they have stopped off somewhere and have been included in a Census (foreign)? Kind regards, Carolyn. Bathurst.

    3. Hi Michael, So "Fairlie" passengers Henry Dewey, Ellen Kenny, Jane Corbet, Zaccheus Timms, Janet Turner, Thomas Scotton were all singles on the voyage, and married or witnessed eachother's marriages shortly after arrival. Thomas, Ellen and Janet lived in Rylstone area several years later. I suppose a support network and friendships were forged on these trips between the passengers and crew. I'm only new to this research so I'm just working things out. Helps to trace ancestors doesn't it when you find other passengers of the vessels they were on. Do you know if any of the other passengers moved to Rylstone? Regards, Susan NSW. 3. Hi to all, Would there be any way I could find out what was the name of the ship in which ancestors sailed from the UK to Australia (probably Sydney) and travelled across the Blue Mountains to Rockley (near Bathurst N.S.W.) in a bullock and dray with 3 little girls, one of whom was "born at sea" in about 1859 - 1860? Their surname was SHEPHARD: George and Charlotte and the girls were Hannah Elizabeth, Sarah Ann and Mary Jane. I have plenty more detail, but am not sure that it isn't just a 'family story'. According to family, George and Charlotte sold everything in England and bought the ship ??????? Any advice/suggestions most gratefully received. Best wishes, Carolyn.

    3. Hi Lynne, Thanks very much for your help re details of "Fairlie" 1848 and info from Gillian Kelly's book "Well-suited to The Colony" regarding passengers Janet Turner and Zaccheus Timms. I'm trying now to find out more about Zaccheus. Does the book mention any more about him or anyone else sailing with him? There was no other reference to Janet Turner in the book I gather? I know from Fairlie indent at local library (on microfilm) that there was a number of young single Irish women on board from Cork Foundling Hospital. They could read and write most of them and had embroidery, dressmaking skills etc. Janet was a dairymaid, and could read but not write. I'd like to know who sponsored her voyage on Fairlie. Does anyone on list know how I could find this information? Kind regards, Susan Lamberton nee Oakley NSW.

I must have a read of Gillian's book, and find out what happened to Zachariah Timms. Janet Turner, who arrived "Fairlie" 1848 married my gggrandfather, James Oakley in 1849. Thankyou very much for your reply, and sending my email on to Gillian Kelly. I hope she can tell me more about the "Fairlie" voyage and passengers, especially Janet. With regards your ancestors Henry Dewey and Ellen Kenny who settled at Rylstone- Janet Turner who married James Oakley also lived at Rylstone 1850's. James worked as a shepherd at Dabee. Where did Henry work? Kind regards, Susan, Central Coast NSW.
