    1. [AUS-IMM-SHIPS] MITCHELL John Albert
    2. Norm and Sylvia
    3. Hello everyone, I am new to this list, and I hope that you can give me some help. I am searching for information on my ancestor, John Albert MITCHELL. He married Sarah Elizabeth SHAW on 2 Jun 1862, and together they had 15 children. But we can find out nothing about him before that date. There is no birth record for him in the NSW Registry of Births Deaths and Marriages. This leads me to think that he may have arrived as an immigrant from Britain. And as he married in 1862 he would probably have been born around 1840. So I suppose that migrant ships from 1840 to 1860 would be of interest, if I could find out how to get to them online. I'm an aged pensioner, so I have a limited income, and I can't afford an Ancestry sub. Can anyone please point me in the right direction to find out what ship he came on? I have just looked at a website where people will look up a passenger list for you, but you have to have the name of the ship first. And I don't have any idea. Is there perhaps a website where I can put in the surname of Mitchell and it will tell me the names of the ships that Mitchells came out on? Thank you very much, Sylvia

    3. Hi Maureen, I'm afraid I don't have any of those names. Martin's son John Thomas moved to the Atherton Tablelands and had 3 children, Inez, John Kendall & Kitty. This is my wife's line. John Thomas had several brothers and sisters but none of those names. There was 2 brothers, Edward Martin (1878-1940) and Albert Everard (1881-1963), who lived long enough to have children but I have no details if they did. 3. Steve Do you have any other Hoffman names other than Martin's? I have them in my tree too, in or around Brisbane in the early 1900's. Mine include William Hoffman (or Hoffmann, it was spelt several ways in documents), who married Harriet Lucy Oxford (haven't been able to ascertain the date) and had children named William Phillip Hofmann (born 1906), Herbert Charles Hoffmann (born 1908), Elsie May Hoffmann (born 1910), and Charles Rudolf Hoffmann (born 1914). As I said, alternate spelling between Hoffman and Hoffmann. Please contact me if any of these names ring a bell. I don't have a Martin, but who knows? 3. Hi Lisa, Thanks for the naturalization record. I didn't have that one. Cheryl I do know - now :-) She is my wife's cousin though they lost touch quite a few years ago. I met Cheryl just last Thursday for the first time but we didn't have much time to talk family. We have each others contact details now so I'm sure we will be in touch. I'm sure some of this research must be old hat to some of you. I started just earlier this year with some notes I'd gathered from several sources in the extended family and decided to try to put them all together. It sure does get in your blood! All the links and info provided through this list would have taken me years to track down, just through not knowing where to look, so thanks to all. 3. Gayle This is fabulous stuff, thank you. The Hoffman line is on my wife's side and the Voorwart has been harder to track down than my own family who seem to have been plagued with disaster on the trips out. I have ancestors that arrived on the ill-fated La Rochelle and Wandrahm so it's nice to get some feel on the other side of the family. The entry specifically mentions stone-masons for Cornish & Bruce who appear to have built the railway to the Victorian Goldfields. This ties in with what the family recalls about Martin being a gold miner. He appears at Maryborough in Victoria during the goldrush and then in Lambing Flat in NSW during the rush there. Lots more digging here I fear. (pun intended :) Thanks again Cheers Steve O Gayle Stewart wrote: >Hi Steve >Found this from Emigrants from Hamburg by Qld FHS >Hope it helps >Gayle >Sunny Mollymook Beach. >Hamburg Passenger Lists > > > >Voorwaarts > >>From The Argus, Monday, February 6, 1860.QFHSdatasearch Version 1.8.0 by >Queensland Family History Society Inc. >>From [Emigrants from Hamburg to Australasia 1850-1879] database on 6/30/2007 >======================================================================= >No : 107 >Surname : HOFFMANN >Given Names: Martin >Town : Klosterhumbd >State : Preussen >Standing : Steinhauer >Age : 23 >Sex : m >Destination: Melbourne >Ship : Voorwaarts >Year : 1859 >ID : 14326 > > >SHIPPING INTELLIGENCE. > >-----------.------------ > >HOBSON'S BAY. > >ARRIVED. > >FEBRUARY 5. > >Voorwarrts, Dutch barque, 633 tons, E.
