Hi Dee, Thank you for your reply. Isn't it funny how all the answers seem to fit and yet be so totally wrong. I really thought that there could be only one person with the name Felix. Now get this. If you look out your front door, as long as it faces the route the ferry takes and look across to Russell Island I will wave to you. I live on the waterfront facing Lamb Is. We have possibly bumped into each other at the library here or at Vicky Point shops or even on the ferry. What a small world. I joined the list two weeks ago looking for my hubbys Drackford family coming from Glasgow to Melbourne and found them via Find My Past but their records don't cover the 1860. best wishes, Ann Perrin on Russell Island ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dee Byster-Graham" <deebg@bigpond.net.au> To: <aus-immigration-ships@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, August 09, 2007 8:08 PM Subject: Re: [AUS-IMM-SHIPS] (no subject) > Hello Ann, > You have gone to a great deal of trouble finding this, and I thank you > sincerely for mailing the info. > > Unfortunately, these are not 'my' Felix and Mary. Hello I'm looking for a John A Harrington (b 1831 Ireland) probably arrived in Australia in the 1850s with his wife Mary. The daughter, also named Mary, was born on the boat coming out. The ship might have originated in Ireland or possibly England. The other one I'm looking for is John Joseph Harrington (b 1872 Tipperary, Ireland) - no relation to the one above. Probably arrived in Australia in the 1890s. Hope you may be able to help. Thank you in advance Animesh Harrington
Hi again, Ann, Omitted to mention that I have the death certs of Felix and Mary, from these we were able to find the grave by the DoD`s for the couple. My relative obtained the marriage details in Derrygonnelly, Fermanagh - dated 1854. The Irish connection reads: Felix Dolan; Father: Felix Dolan, farmer. Mother: Norah McCabe. Mary Dolan; Father: James Snow, farmer. Mother Mary Keon. All the above from Fermanagh. Becomes difficult from here on, as we are searching for 1780 or thereabouts, and not a lot of records easily accessible. I guess we wouldn`t research our family trees if the mystery was absent - at least that is what I tell myself!:-) Cheers, Dee. > >
9th August 1857 to 9th August 2007. 150th Anniversary of the arrival from Liverpool to Moreton Bay, then NSW now Queensland of the ship "Mary Pleasants". If any listers had ancestors who were passengers on this voyage, I would like to hear from them to share information. Many thanks, Carole (Elliott.) Researching passengers, William and Rebecca (Moffat) Elliott.
Hello Ann, You have gone to a great deal of trouble finding this, and I thank you sincerely for mailing the info. Unfortunately, these are not 'my' Felix and Mary. As strange as it seems, this Felix Dolan whom you name was actually the cousin of my Felix Dolan - my G-Grandparents immigrated initially and then helped their cousins immigrate to Brisbane also. Both cousins married a lady called Mary, and there was a great deal of confusion until we were able to sort out the respective families afterwards, as both families settled in South Brisbane and kept in very close touch for many years. 'My' Felix and Mary, probably put of desperation at the constant mix-up of the two families by Qld BDM, changed the spelling of their name to DOLIN. Much detective work was required before we found their grave in South Brisbane cemetery as BCC cemetery site has Felix Dolin listed as Felise Doolan etc., and I am told that the records of arrivals were flood-destroyed for the specific year and a half time frame of my family`s arrival. We can be precise for the dates, as one child, John, born and died in Fermanagh Jan 1861 and next child, Margaret, born in Brisbane July 1862. All the records appear to be available for the second couple, in fact my distant relative (also a member of this list) has written the history of that side of the family. He is a direct descendent of the child William whom you mentioned . Attempting to tie my side in is a jig-saw puzzle marathon, and I am always looking for a way around the difficulty hence the mail which you kindly answered. As soon as possible I will try to find the arrival via the old 'Moreton Bay Courier' records held in State Library. Please excuse my long-winded explanation, your in-depth research on our behalf deserved a similar reply. They are our enigma. Or, as Mr Macawber said 'Something may turn up"! Warmest regards, Dee. Hi Dee, Qld Archives online http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/research/indexes.asp in their Immigration lists there is Felix age 34 and Mary age 24, Mary an infant, Catherine age 4 and William age 6 travelling on the "Maryborough" 16th Aug 1866. Could it be you made a mistake in the arrival year and this might be them? But there is no Hugh or Annie unless they were William Hugh and Catherine Annie. The Qld BDM's are on line at http://www.justice.qld.gov.au/bdm/IndexSearch.htm# and there are 6 Mary Dolan's. One died in 1910 dau of Peter Doherty & Mary Reed. Could this be wife of Felix? In 1873 Mary Dolan dau of Felix Dolan & Mary Doherty. Could this be your couples daughter? There is also a death in 1897 for a Felix Dolan son of Owen Dolan & Mary Davitt. Also two girls babies born to this couple. Margaret in 1860 and Mary Jane in 1874. Two marriages for Annie Dolan. On death certs for Victoria they tell how long the deceased was in the Colony. A phone call to the Qld Registery Office and they could tell you if that info is on Qld death certs that would at least give you the correct year they came to Qld. and perhaps some other clues. I'd look at getting the death certs for Felix & Mary. Marriage certs might also have some other clues. A search of the newspaper for death and funeral notices might add a few more clues. A search of the cemeteries might turn up some clues on headstones. Brisbane City Council has an online database. There is a Felix buried in Toowong in 1897 looks like it could be the Felix above. http://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/ Hope this helps in some small way. I've now realised I need information on the Blundell and immigrants into Sydney May 1853. Seem to recall discussion about this ship of immigrants as members of a Loan Society or something. Was that discussion on this list? Could someone refresh my senior memory please? Any info accepted gratefully. Thanks, John
Hi, All, Seeing the list is quiet, may I repost a question I asked a while back, since I now have more definite information than I did earlier? SHEPHARD (sic) family, parents George and Charlotte (who say they were married in England, but may not have been as I have not been able to find a marriage anywhere there) came to Sydney with daughters Hannah Elizabeth and Sarah Ann. Mary Jane was born 3 Jun, 1859 at "Summerhill", Co. Georgiana, Rockley and registered in Bathurst on 1 Aug, 1859. The 2 older daughters were then aged 4 and 2. As they were already in Bathurst in June, 1859 and had landed in Sydney, travelled across the Blue Mountains in a bullock- harnessed dray, the supposed 'family story' that Mary Jane was b. abt 1860 at sea does not ring true. If the journey took about 6 weeks(?), they must have landed earlier in 1859. I am not sure whether they were assisted or unassisted immigrants, but I have been unable to find them on any on-line shipping list. Would SKS have any idea as to how I could locate their arrival? Best wishes, Carolyn. Bathurst.
Taking advantage of a quiet time........... Can anyone tell me where I might find images of these two ships please: EDWARD (1) - 1829 convict ship QUEEN OF THE SEAS - 1855 into Victoria Thanks for any help, Maureen
Hello listers. Seeing list was quiet I thought I'd ask if anyone would have a photo of the "Amelia Thompson" or have info about it? Some of my Hanslow ancestors arrived Tasmania 1836 on it as emigrants. Kind regards, Susan NSW. Hi Val and Ann, It certainly is quiet at the moment. So perhaps this is an opportunity for me to post what 'old-listers' have heard before - in the hopes that a 'new-lister' may be able to help. My G-Grandparents, Felix and Mary Dolan, children Hugh and Annie, arrived in Brisbane from Fermanagh between Jan 1861 and June 1862. To date I have found nothing re their departure point, ship name, nor exact date of arrival. Have searched Qld Archives and LDS to no avail. Not yet visited State Library but hope to soon. Believe they arrived as assisted immigrants, but can`t confirm this. Have searched through arrival records from all other States. Absolutely certain the dates are correct. If any other lister is searching DOLAN; SNOW; McCABE; KEON from Fermanagh I would love to hear from you. Cheers, Dee. ----- Original Message ----- From: <acpittard@optusnet.com.au> To: "Val Bassett" <dozey@gil.com.au>; <aus-immigration-ships@rootsweb.com> Sent: 09 August, 2007 8:00 AM Subject: Re: [AUS-IMM-SHIPS] (no subject) > Val, I think that ones being quiet at the moment. Hello from Melbourne. I am looking for any assistance with my research. My Grandfather, Percy Harold Ryton BENSON was a ship's stoker in June 1907. My Grandmother and her family arrived in Brisbane on the '' Orotava'' in May 1908 and Percy was there to meet them. I have not found him in assisted or unassisted migrants lists, so possibly: He worked his passage here He "jumped" ship in Australia I have checked the NAA, no luck. hi Lynne, Wow, thank you! I have spent hours looking for this person including searching the micro films at the State Library, Sydney, with no luck & the detailed online indexes that I have been looking at don't cover the period in question.
