She was a single funnelled, two masted, brigantine rigged vessel with a single screw and a speed of 12 knots. She had berths for 49-1st class passengers as well as a considerable number of steerage class. She commenced her maiden voyage on 21/9/1886 when she sailed from London via Suez to Batavia and Brisbane and made her last sailing on 24/10/1902. The company was wound up in 1903 and ownership of the "Jumna" passed to British India Steam Navigation Co.Ltd. I have no record of her career after this time but she was broken up in 1907. The State Archives at Runcorn would be the place to ask for details of her travel to Cooktown. http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/ You could put the question to them by email. best wishes Ann in Brisbane ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gwen Burrows" <gbu07272@bigpond.net.au> To: <aus-immigration-ships@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, August 30, 2007 9:35 AM Subject: Re: [AUS-IMM-SHIPS] GUILDFORD 1824 > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Lynne Radford" <lynne_r@tpg.com.au> > To: <aus-immigration-ships@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Wednesday, August 29, 2007 11:58 PM > Subject: Re: [AUS-IMM-SHIPS] GUILDFORD 1824 > > > Lynn, You seem to have incredible knowledge of shipping, so I'm wondering > if > you can point me in the right direction. 3. Hi Gary, Same details for ship as replied to Susan. Log of Logs Vol.1, By Ian Nicholson has Guildford 1827 Left London - Plymouth, 31/3 - Teneriffe- Sydney, 25/7, with 189 male prisoners. + anonymous diary, 1827, NL, Canberra, MS 7565 + surgeons journals, 1827-1829, AJCP PRO reels 3196-7 Charles Bates, The Convict Ships. from Chapter 10 Following the 6th voyage, and the Guildford's return to England ownership passed to James Mangles & Marcus Johnson. She was thoroughly repaired, registered anew, described as carvel-built and square-rigged, with a standing bow-spirit. Her depth was reduced by 2", to 5' 8" , her dimension remained the same and she retained her square stern, quarter galleries and shield bust figure. Her registration tonnage, was increased from 521 51/94 to 553 62/94 tons. When she next reached Port Jackson, in 1827, it was reported that twenty thousand pounds had been spent on her and as she obtained a charter from the East India company, fulfilling the company's requirements of a dry-dock survey, it is evident that she had received a very thorough overhaul. Her last voyage from Dublin to Port Jackson arriving 4 Nov 1829. Early the following year she sailed from Hobart with a detachment of troops for India, arriving at Bombay 14 April 1830. Harrison then took her out to Singapore, from which port she sailed for England. She was never heard of again, presumed foundered. 1827, Guildford, embarked 190 male prisoners, 1 death, landed 189 male prisoners at Sydney Guildford Arrival date 25 July 1827, 7th voyage, 533tons built at the Thames 1810, Master Magnus Johnson, Surgeon Chas. Linton, sailed 31/3/1827 Other details re 1827 voyage, from The Convict Ships "Johnson was a prudent and conscientious master, and he treated the convicts humanely. Various charges were brought against him by Surgeon Charles Linton after the Guildford's arrival at Port Jackson in 1827, but Linton was piqued by Johnson having failed to consult him when an informer had disclosed an alleged plot at mutiny, and there seems no doubt that the charges were groundless. In an affidavit, the commander of the guard, Captain J. D. Forbes, of the 39th Regiment, declared: "During the greater part of the voyage the prisoners were, with very exceptions, out of irons, and, whenever the weather permitted, on deck far more, indeed, than appeared to me either consistent with prudence or warranted by necessity, and generally the whole of them (190) at once". In another affidavit, the third mate, George Lynch Cotton, disclosed that he had been appointed by Johnson to assist Linton and had been relieved "from every other duty relative to the ship" Kind regards, Lynne. 3. G'day List, Being encouraged by the information that Lynne has provided to others I am encouraged to ask a question that for years I have believed could only be answered by a massive time consuming search. Sometime towards the end of the Great War but prior 21st August, 1922 a widow Ruth JONES nee MIDDLETON (born in Kent in 1883) and her daughter Dorothy Julia JONES (born in London in 1907) arrived in Australia. I'm assuming they arrived in Sydney although Ruth had another child in Mannum, South Australia in 1922. Ruth's occupation had been as a cook & I have not ruled out the possibility that she may have worked her passage if that could be done in those days. I don't believe there were any friends or relatives in Australia to sponsor them & I am of the opinion that finances would have been quite stretched for a single mother in those times. Is it possible to find these people in immigration records or from immigration agents' records? Regards Chris in Adelaide

    3. Hello Lynne, Well, that explains the nautical connection! And congratulations on a happy 32 year 'short' marriage. :-) I have posted before and despite lots of help from kind people here can`t make the breakthrough so hope I don`t bore you with the repitition! Thanks for you kind offer of help, it is much appreciated. I have searched for my GGrandparents for some time now with no result, always being told that the records for the particular period have been lost in floods in Brisbane. On Monday I visited the new State Library in Brisbane and found the first little glimmer of light ( more akin to a searchlight, actually!) in a book entitled: 'Early Shipping Moreton Bay Jan 1860 to Dec 1863' Volume 2. Surname; DOLAN 44/45 173 My folks FELIX DOLAN, wife MARY , son HUGH 6 yrs, daughter ANNIE 4 yrs, arrived from Fermanagh Ireland sometime between the dates of Jan 1861 and June 1862. As the time-frame of their arrival is quite specific, (one child born and died Ireland Jan 1861 - next child born Brisbane July 1862) I am sure that this entry is 'my' DOLAN. However there was nothing else, not a date, ship name, or rest of the family mentioned. To say I was gobsmacked is an understatement! When I asked where I could fine the rest of the information staff told me that I would have to visit State Archives and ask there. Am unable to visit for a couple of weeks due to circumstances, and perhaps when I do I will come up with a blank again. Can you perhaps tell me what the numbers in the entry represent, if they are pertinent to another book or document? Possibly you know of this book mentioned. Any help you can offer would be so very much appreciated, Lynne, my cousins have searched unsuccessfully for the name of the ship and arrival date for many years, and although I have searched for only 6 months I share their frustration. Our search is complicated by the arrival of another branch of the DOLAN family, cousins to the first, who`s records are easily found in later registers, 1865/66 and who have the same first names! Thanks so much for your help, Warm regards, Dee. 3. Hello Dee, Thank you for your kind words. I like to help, and have many resources here. My interest stems, I am sure from my husband, whom I met on a voyage to UK, (he was an engineer on the P&O ships) We met 34 years ago and have been married for 32 yrs. He says you get less for Murder!! If I can be of any assistance in furthering your research, please ask and I will see what might be available. Take care, Lynne. 3. Hi Lynne, You have a wonderful depth of knowledge on the subject of shipping to Australia. It is always a pleasure to read your answers to whomever you are helping, I learn something new every time you answer a query on this site. Whilst the subject may not be pertinent to my research at present, I keep them all knowing I shall probably require them sometime in the future. Thank you for the knowledge freely given. Perhaps one day I will find the name of the ship my family immigrated from Ireland in, and you will be able to fill in the 'blanks' of the voyage for me. Looking forward to that day! 3. Hi Susan, The Guildford was a ship of 521 tons built at the Thames in 1810. The Guildford was one of the best known convict ships ... In eight voyages as a convict ship the Guildford conveyed over 1,500 male prisoners to Australia for the loss of about a dozen men on the passage, the record of her passages being as follows: 1812 London to Port Jackson 137 days 1816 Ireland to Sydney not recorded 1818 Cork to Sydney 138 days 1820 Portsmouth to Sydney 139 days 1822 London to Sydney 99 days 1824 England to Sydney 190 days 1827 Plymouth to Sydney 116 days 1829 Dublin to Sydney 115 days The Guildford had the same master for its first seven voyages, Magnus JOHNSON. Robert HARRISON was her master on her eighth voyage. "Johnson was a prudent and conscientious master, and he treated the convicts humanely" (Bateson, 1983, p.232). On her fourth voyage, the Guildford sailed from Portsmouth on 14 May 1820, passing via the Cape to Sydney, where she arrived on 30 September 1820, and then on to Hobart where she arrived on 28 October 1820, 167 days after leaving Portsmouth. Her surgeon on this voyage was Hugh WALKER. She carried 190 male convicts, of which one was landed at Sydney and the remaining 189 were landed at Hobart Town.
