Hello from Melbourne. I am looking for any assistance with my research. My Grandfather, Percy Harold Ryton BENSON was a ship's stoker in June 1907. My Grandmother and her family arrived in Brisbane on the '' Orotava'' in May 1908 and Percy was there to meet them. I have not found him in assisted or unassisted migrants lists, so possibly: He worked his passage here He "jumped" ship in Australia I have checked the NAA, no luck. Any other suggestions will be very welcome. I have all of his family in both UK and Queensland and all UK Census data. Cheers, Bob

G'day Colleen, I can't help with the Melbourne arrivals but I have the following details from S.A. Michael FORRESTAL(sic) was born 21st November, 1842 and died on 16th March, 1917 and was buried at West Terrace Cemetery. He was a Roman Catholic and a Boilermaker's Assistant. He arrived prior to 1871 and lived in Adelaide. He married Cath D'Arcy who was born in 1843 and died on 18th May, 1919. I can find 10 children viz Mary Ann 1864- , Kate 1868- , Sarah 1870- , Ellen 1870- , Bridget 1871-, Edward 1873-, John 1875- , James 1879-1881, Elizabeth 1880-1942 and Teresa 1882-. Cath appears to have been known as Kate or Catherine with a surname of DORSTAY, DORCEY or DORSEY. I have also seen Michael recorded as FORSTER John married Mary THOMAS in 1900 - at least 3 children Ellen married Ernest William PIKE in 1892 Teresa/Theresa married William Alexander ELLIS in 1914 Kate married John James OWENS in 1894 - at least 6 children Mary Ann married William James HUNT in 1902 - at least 2 children Sarah married Edward WEISEMEYER in 1907 Bridget married Edwin GIBBS in 1895 E. & O. E. Regards, Chris in Adelaide P.S. If Michael arrived in Melbourne in 1875 aged 20 he would have been 10 years of age when he married in 1865!!! -----Original Message----- From: aus-immigration-ships-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-immigration-ships-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Ron Parker Sent: Saturday, 29 September 2007 10:57 AM To: aus-immigration-ships@rootsweb.com Subject: [AUS-IMM-SHIPS] Forrestall Hello All I have appreciated the past assistance from readers of this site in helping identify my ancestry, new information to hand requires research of Victorian records I once again would welcome assistance. The back ground is I originally believed my GG Grandfather Michael Forrestall (forrester) and wife Catherine DÁrcy (Dorsey) emigrated from Ireland to Adelaide as a married couple in about 1868. Fresh information from a family member would suggest this could be incorrect and the following may be the correct information. Michael Forrester aged 20 accompanied by Mary Ann Forrester aged 20, could be a sister, arrived Melbourne Aug 1875 on board ship Mermaid. I believe this information is contained in fish no 120 page 003, assume this is from state library records. Michael Forrester married Catherine Dorsey in 1865, no idea where this is recorded. My research indicate the ship Mermaid made a number of trips to Aust during this period, however I have been unable to locate an arrival in Aug 1875. or any passenger listings. I would very much appreciate if someone in Melbourne could research and verify this information. Hello Linda and all I'd be very interested in this too. It was trying to look up my ancestors Elizabeth and William WILTON in the passenger list for this very journey on www.ancestry.com.au that led me to write to this forum the other day (see thread: NSW 1828-1842 Bounty Immigrants List on Ancestry). This Bounty Immigrants list is on there as a free index, so you don't need a subscription to look at it - you do have to register though. And it's not visible from the Home page - to find it, click on Search at the top of the Home page, then look in the right hand column - it should be there to click on. But it only tells you about people whose surnames start with A, B, C, maybe H for some reason ... but to my frustration, definitely not W! It gives only 19 people from the William Jardine 1841. Hi listers, I was wondering if anyone knows what is going on with the NSW 1828-1842 Bounty Immigrants List on the Ancestry website. It seems to me that something must be wrong with it, as only passengers with surnames starting near the beginning of the alphabet are showing up. For example, I searched for the voyage of the "William Jardine" in 1841 and it returned only 19 names, most starting with A or B (and two with H). I've read somewhere (in the archives of this list, I think, that there were 341 passengers on that ship! I am also pretty sure that my ancestors William and Elizabeth Wilton were among them, and I'd like to confirm this, so this technical (?) glitch is quite frustrating for me. At first I thought that maybe it was just my bad luck and that some of the records for that voyage of the "William Jardine" were missing, but then I tried several other test searches, for ships and for surnames, all with the same kinds of results - i.e. essentially the only people EVER listed are those with surnames starting with early letters in the alphabet. So it looks more like a programming or implementation error of some sort. I sent a note to Ancestry about 10 days ago via their Feedback facility, but I haven't had any reply. Sue
Hi Listers, I am trying to find the arrival in Australia from London of Joseph James Felton, possibly accompanied by a brother John George Felton or within a family group with father Joseph Felton, mother Emily (Pigott), and children Joseph James, John George and Catherine. I have not found any record in Australia of father, mother, John George or Catherine. However, Joseph James married in Goulburn in 1866 Jane Brabham; together they had four children. Joseph James died in Goulburn in 1904 aged 80. Any help will be appreciated. David W Tattersall, Murrumbateman, NSW.
Carolyn, It's actually http://www.ancestorsonboard.com/ and, yes, thanks, Ann, it can be found at http://www.findmypast.com/home.jsp However, unfortunately, it doesn't yet cover the period I'm interested in and appears to be a site where you need to 'register' in order to access the actual information. Hi there Looking for info on the above. Have seen the film of the manifest but forgot to take note of the departure port! I have a pair of Irish ancestors (Owen and Catherine QUINN) who came over and wonder where they departed from. States on the manifest they were from Co. Tyrone but unsure exactly where - they may well have lived somewhere in England if the ship departed from there, which I assume it will have done as there were English, Scottish and Irish immigrants. Interestingly the only confirmation I have found about the Cadet that year was on the NSW Archives, not on any of the normal immigration ships websites. Thanks for any help or advice Meegan
Can SKS please provide the URL for a website which allows searches for immigrants to Australia from the UK? (1800s - 1900s) I have forgotten the name of the on-going project and dont seem to have bookmarked the website, either! It was launched earlier this year, I think, with quite some publicity.
