William SUTHERLAND and his wife Christina ROSS arrived in Sydney, New South Wales in January, 1839 from Cromarty, Scotland. The ship was the 'Lady McNaughton'. This ship returned to Sydney 16 Dec 1840, which leads to these questions. Did the 'Lady McNaughton' sail only between Cromarty and Sydney? If so, for how long? If the 'Lady McNaughton' carried human cargo to Australia, what was her cargo on her return voyages? Any and all advice or suggestions about where to seek/find answers to these questions (and/or details about the 'Lady McNaughton') will be appreciated. With thanks in advance, Frances Bishop bishad@direct.ca
Seeking information/persons whose forebears arrived per this vessel. Sailed from Bremen 21/29.12.1858 with 142/145 passengers and general cargo aboard; via Moreton Bay (arriving 25/28.05.1859) to Sydney - docking 14.07.1859. As a full Passenger List for this voyage doesn't exist at 'either end' i.e. Germany or Australia, my long term goal is to compile at least a partial passenger list and I have made some progress in this. Ultimately, I aim to write a book dealing with the "Solon", her 1858/1859 voyage and her subsequent loss off Shoalhaven, New South Wales, Australia April 1860. (My original interest was piqued as I believe my forefather, Johann Diedrich SCHWEDTMANN aka 'John SWEEDMAN', was a Crew Member aboard this vessel; later settling here in Australia.) Have (incomplete) Passenger List, copies of List of Crew & letter written by passenger, as well as various newspaper notices/articles of the day ("Moreton Bay Courier" & "Sydney Morning Herald"), info from Germany re. registration of vessel, etc., if anyone would like 'look up' and/or photocopy. Hi, Does anyone have details re ships or passenger lists of ships from Port Philip or Sydney to Auckland, New Zealand March/April 1842? (Looking for a John Lynch passenger who arrived NZ April 1842 from PP or Sydney) Thanks, Kind Regards, Julie Lindenberg, nee Lynch Auckland, New Zealand.
Researching my G G Grandfather James Hill who emigrated from England to Tasmania in 1842/1843 with his wife Lydia Kempy. A son, William Frederick Hill, was born on board an unknown ship off the Tasmanian coast on 30 Nov 1842. The birth was registered at Longford (near Launceston) on 9 Jan 1843. I have not been able to identify this ship and would appreciate any information or suggestions. Hello Listers, I saw this as a new group and am hoping to find out more information concerning my family that went to Australia sometime between 1871 Cornwall census time and 1880 when their first child was born..... I haven't been able to find a marriage for this couple either, I'm still looking..... Maybe they got married on ship? Alfred James Kempe, from St.Austell, was only 14 in 1871.... So, the years of travel is probably closer to 1875 to 1880....... Alfred's wife was Mary Charlotte Oliver from St. Blazey..... I did get the birth certificate for their first child born in Ovingham, Adelaide, South Australia. Also got the father's death cert., he died 3 days after another child was born in Dec. 1882 and Mary Charlotte went back to Cornwall with the two children. She died in 1885 and the grandparents basically raised the two children. I saw this on the Cornish - Gen - L and was wondering how long the free trips from Cornwall to Australia lasted... It sounds like a good deal! See below..... Regards and Thanks for any help! Bill Kemp, South Florida...... -------Book - 'The Magic of Cornwall"------- FREE EMIGRATION TO SOUTH AUSTRALIA The Government of South Australia Grant FREE PASSAGES to Agricultural and other labourers, Artisans and Mechanics, Miners, under 40 years, Female Domestic Servants, Housemaids and Cooks, under 35 years; above those ages ASSISTED PASSAGES over 40 and under 50 years, 8 pounds each. Those paying their own passages receive a Land Order of the value of 20 pounds for every adult above 12 years, and of the value of 10 pounds for every child of under 12 years. Greetings Listers! I am trying to find out where and when George C COATE (age abt 22 - 24 years) arrived in Australia. He was on the 1861 Somerset Census and married in Ballarat, Victoria in 1864. I have checked all the passenger list information available for Victoria on the web courtesy of the Victorian Government, and no George. Can anyone out there help me as to where to head next? Are there other state lists on the web? Help! Regards, Nigel BOUNDY Western Australia --------------------------------- Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Auctions $2 Million Sweepstakes - Got something to sell?
