Hi list, I am new to your list and I am trying to find when my Uncle arrived in Australia. Family oral history says that my Uncle JOHN WILLIAM HARLEY Immigrated to Australia around 1920/ 1924 landing at Perth Western Australia where he worked for a time as a boat builder. He was born in South Shields Co. Durhan UK 24/2/1904 and had worked in ship building in South Shields. After some time in Perth he settled in the North East of New South Wales around Murwillumbah. Could somebody please point me in the right direction where I can find passenger lists for Perth in the 1920 / 1924 period. Thanks Mick in Brisbane.
Hi, I am trying to locate the passenger/crew list for the SS Hohenstaufen which had it last voyage to Australia in 1895. I am looking for Richard William Charles Muller (may have anglicised his Christian names) who disembarked in Adelaide South Australia. His naturalisation papers state that the ship arrived on/about 05/02/1895 but the vessel did not start her last voyage to Australia via Bremen/Suez Canal until 08/05/1895. Any information would be great. Thanks Leonie

You would need to check NSW State Records films of passenger lists 1828 -43........ There are indexes for these on film too in many libraries as you need to find the film # Also check film of the Sydney Morning Herald for a few days after after the arrival dates Some other State/ larger Libraries could also have some/most of this info bye Marg Morters Member of Central Coast Family History Society GOSFORD NSW Australia

Here are the dates for which you can find the series of Board of Trade British passenger lists, together with a brief description of what you may find. Note that these lists are NOT filmed! They can only be seen at the Public Record Office in Kew, England. They are very time consuming to search, there are no indexes of any kind at Kew and no official 'finding aids' exist. Lists after 1906, can often open up the way to locate that elusive information of the name of the ship which brought transmigrants (ie migrants who came to Britain to board their ship to Australia) into the UK. This is the only way of extracting that information as there are no arrival lists for these voyages (see below). Note that the name of the 'feeder' ship is sometimes given, but was not required. From 1907, the name of the steamship line bringing these transmigrants to the UK was a requirement and should be separately recorded. BT26 - Passenger Lists, Inwards, 1878-1888 and 1890-1960 These give the names of all passengers arriving in the UK where the ship's voyage began at a port outside Europe and the Mediterranean Sea. Names of passengers who boarded these ships at European ports and disembarked in the UK will be included in these lists. However it should be noted that passenger lists for ships whose voyages both began and ended within Europe (including the UK and the Mediterranean Sea) are not included. There is a small collection of lists between 1878 and 1888. The continuous run begins in 1890. BT27 - Passenger Lists, Outwards, 1890-1960 These give the names of all passengers leaving the UK where the ship's eventual destination was a port outside Europe and the Mediterranean Sea. Names of passengers who disembarked at European ports from these ships will be included in these lists. However it should be noted that passenger lists for ships whose voyages both began and ended within Europe (including the UK and the Mediterranean Sea) are not included. Lists earlier than 1890 have not survived. It is important also to remember that British lists have not been filmed, many of them are in a fragile condition and searching them is very time consuming. There are no indexes of names, and most lists are not alphabetical. The information given varies but can include age, occupation, last address in the UK, (outbound, after 1920) and proposed destination. Inbound lists after 1920 will usually include the proposed address in the UK but they do NOT show last address prior to joining the ship. They are arranged monthly by port of departure. To use them you need to know at least the approximate date of departure and the port if you are to have any realistic hope of finding a passenger's name. Debbie Beavis www.passengerlists.co.uk

Hello Michael All is not lost, and you may yet be able to knock down that brick wall! I don't know what there may be in Australian archives, but there are British service records of 20th Century merchant seamen - and that should include those whose only voyage ended up in them jumping ship. I am joint owner of the Mariners website at http://www.mariners-L.freeserve.co.uk (and the Mariners' rootsweb mailing list) and I have written a guide for the website explaining how to access service records for 19th and 20th century seamen. You should be able to find his record card, on which you will see the ships he served on - your only obstacle is that they are generally shown by ship's official number, not their name. All is not lost however as there are lists of ships/official numbers.Give us a hoy on Mariners when you've got that far and someone will identify the ships for you. Hi list, I am new to your list and I am trying to find when my Uncle and Father arrived in Australia. Family oral history says that my Uncle JOHN WILLIAM HARLEY Immigrated to Australia around 1920/ 1925 landing at Perth Western Australia where he worked for a time as a boat builder. He was born in South Shields Co. Durhan UK 24/2/1904 and had worked in ship building in South Shields. After some time in Perth he settled in the North East of New South Wales around Murwillumbah. My father was HENRY HARLEY also born in South Shields UK on 9/1/1906 and after he received a letter from his brother in Perth signed up on a merchant ship as a cabin boy and arrived in Newcastle New South Wales where he jumper ship around early 1924.(this to me suggests that his brother John William was at this stage living on the East Coast) He worked as a Charlie Chaplin impersonator for a short time and then departed Newcastle for Murwillumbah by train to be with his brother. I have searched the National Archives lists of crew members of all ships entering Newcastle from late 1923 to mid 1924 but due to incomplete records was not able to find any trace of when he jumped ship or the name of the ship that he arrived on. I am looking for advise /Help in trying to locate when they both arrived in Australia and on what ship. This has been a brick wall to me for some years any help would be most welcome. Michael Harley in Overcast Brisbane Australia.
I am new to this list so if my query is out of order please forgive me. I am trying to locate the passenger list for the above vessel. This was the vessel's last voyage to Australia. The date that I have on the vessel is 08/05/1895 but I am not sure if this is its departure date or its arrival date at Adelaide South Australia. The person that I am seeking is Richard William Charles Muller (he may have anglicised his name). Thank you Leonie Tuit
Margaret, Sometimes the record called "Musters and other Papers" will give that information. It did on one of mine in 1836 but later ones it didn't.
