Samuel Plimsoll arrived NSW in August, 1877. (William Robert Dodd) 5. Samuel Plimsoll arrived NSW in June, 1883. (John Dodd) 6. Sea Park arrived NSW in March 1858. (Bolwell Family - Caroline 40yrs, Frederick 19yrs, Matilda 17yrs, Andrew 15yrs, Julia 12yrs, Maria 10 yrs, Clara 6yrs, Faith an infant. A lot of my relations came on these ships. 2. Roger Brown
    3. Hi list How long after the end of WW2 did rationing continue in Os ?? I'm trying to date a letter sent from a great aunt living in Ultimo, Sydney, NSW. I don't know her married name, but I have an address, so trying to narrow down the time frame. She says <"Yes I find the ration for one a bit small, although we get six ozs. of butter to your three, but we are only allowed one lb. of sugar & 2 ozs. of tea a week. Meat is rationed too, but I do not eat much meat. " > Also <"All household linen & clothing are still rationed, but not bread or vegetables, carrots are 9d lb. this week & beans are down to 1/6, you are lucky to get tobacco. The men here scram from shop to shop, to get a packet of cigarettes and matches are doled out one box at a time."> Then <"but I think everything will brighten up shortly, when our men get sick of striking. No potatoes this week, the wharf labourers were out & the spuds went bad on the ships and were dumped"> For the record, she was born in 1876, Florence Rose BROWN, in London, UK. Any thoughts on the rationing would be appreciated. From Warm and wet Kent UK. Roger ICQ 41417472 mailto:<Roger_Brown@bigfoot.com>

    3. The "Lord of the Isles" was an iron tea clipper built in 1853 by Robert Scott & Co of Greenock for Maxton & Co, Greenock. Under Captain Peter Maxton of Menam it made its maiden voyage leaving Greenock in November 1853 and arriving in Sydney on 1 February 1854. I would be grateful for further details about that voyage - and also an information about what became of the clipper. Many thanks Sybil

    1. Emily
    2. G'day people I wanted to know if someone can check the Passenger list for the Emily for me. Emily arrived Melb 21.10.1852 aboard were Edward and Harriett Austin, daughter Alice b 1849. I have since been told there was another daughter Kate Elizabeth born July 1851 ... I had no record of this and looking at the date it would mean that she would quite possibly been born at sea. Would appreciate anyone's assistance over there. Bright Blessings Sandie in Fremantle drought stricken Western Australia.

    3. Hi Ken, I can answer one question for you. Access to shipping records is at the Public Records Office in Melbourne City......right near Parliament Railway Station Sally ----- Original Message ----- From: Ken Dickins To: AUS-IMMIGRATION-SHIPS-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, July 26, 2001 3:39 PM Subject: ACCESS TO SHIPPING RECORDS Dear List, I need advice on how I might access the details from a shipping passenger list of an 1853 arrival in Victoria. I live in Armidale, NSW and have access to remarkable records locally. However, as one might expect, they concentrate on NSW and Sydney. I have found the arrival of my family - Edward George DICKENS, wife Lucy Jane (BROWN), and seven children on the "Minerva" in June 1853 from the PROV website. A family record contradicts this, stating that the family arrived on the clipper "Blackwell" in 1854. This DICKENS family settled in Geelong. Can some kind soul on the list access the detailed record for me? The PROV reference is Port B, Fiche 40, Page 1; I would meet expenses. Is there a copy of the Victorian shipping list in Sydney or Brisbane? I go to those cities from time to time. If I could get to Melbourne, where would I go to look up the detailed records, and what arrangements would need to be made in advance? Do the records show the main items of freight carried on the ship? Makes it easier to tell if it is a subject we might be able to assist with - rather than having to look through all the messages.. Just a thought. Philip Blackwell

    3. Hi to all listers I have just uploaded passenger lists for the Scottish Hero, 1876, 1877, 1879, 1882 and 1886. For those with ancestors on the 1886 the list is an immigration agents index so the information is more detailed. I would appreciate it if anyone who has ancestors on the Scottish Hero could check to see that all names are ok as the originals are very faded and hard to read you will find the lists at Port of Maryborough http://maryborough.50megs.com

    1. Mitchell- died at sea
    2. Cameron
    3. Could a member help with a foreign death? George Alexander Mitchell was born at Aberdeen Scotland in 1873. In the 1890s, he migrated to Australia with his brother Adam. Then around 1901, George left for South Africa to fight in the Boer War and thereafter made his life over there. At some time between say 1905 and 1960, he (maybe with his wife) boarded a ship to sail from SA to Australia to visit his brother. George died on the ship as it was approaching Perth or Melbourne, or when it was in dock. I assume his death was recorded. Can you tell me what his death certificate says? Many thanks Sybil Cameron

    3. Could anyone help me. I am trying to find information on my gg grandparents George Towers & Mary Annisabella Guilbert. They came to Australia, George from England and Mary from France, sometime around the 1850's, not sure when exactly. They married 17 December 1851 in South Australia. Then came to Victoria some time after 1853. They settled in Alexandra, Victoria, for many years, before moving to Melbourne. Would love to see a passenger list, and know when and what ship they arrived on. Thanks Sharon
