    1. [AUS-IMM-SHIPS] Immigration to Victoria - New Indexes
    2. Raymond W Henderson
    3. This arrived today in a newletter from McBeth and thought that many of you might be interested? Regards, Ray. - Immigration to Victoria - New Indexes On Monday at its annual volunteer's function, the Public Record Office Victoria (PROV), in recognition of the work of volunteers in creating an index of passengers, launched a pre-release CD-ROM of new indexes. This pre-release immigration index using Digger(tm) is available NOW for searching on computers at the PROV city Archives Centre and will be available soon at PROV's Ballarat repository. Copies of the CD containing over 700,000 passengers were given to the Australian Institute of Genealogical Studies (AIGS) and the Genealogical Society of Victoria (GSV) for use by members in their Melbourne libraries. The volunteers who indexed the records are in the main represented by these societies. As a pre-release CD the entries are in draft form. The contents have not been through the extensive checking process that indexes which are published by the PROV go through. But as a finding aid the indexes will help many researchers locate passengers coming to Australia. The PROV has incorporated into the CD a process for reporting errors or ommission. WHAT RECORDS ARE ON THE CD? The British and foreign passengers 1900 to 1912 and passengers from New Zealand 1852 to 1923 are searchable by name etc. The main body of passengers from overseas ports have now been indexed from 1852 to 1912. These records are represented by VPRS 7666, 7667 and 7786 (microfiche). The gap is those passengers from British and foreign ports 1890 to 1899. These are expected to be published next year by PROV. Our thanks must be expressed to all those volunteers who have undertaken this massive indexing task so that all of us can locate family coming to Victoria. We must also express our thanks to the management and staff of PROV for taking the risk of making this index available in a limited way in a pre-release form. In the Year of the Volunteer the PROV has acknowledged the work of the volunteers in a very positive manner to the benefit of all of us. I have used the index sucessfully to locate a family arriving in Victoria about 1910. I hope it is as helpful to all of you.

    3. Hi Everyone, Can anyone suggest how I could find out which ship my grandfather sailed on around 1915 from England into Sydney. The easiest thing to do would be to ask him but he passed away in 1985 - a bit hard to do now. (sigh) Cheers, Catherine

Prior to that there were a loose collection of Colonies who all kept their own records and had customs posts on their borders with other Colonies. Some kept records better than others . There was a concerted effort in the late 1860s to get rid of convict records so as 'to remove the taint' So over all we are lucky to have what records that have survived The Vic PRO has alot of arrival records on line, on fiche and I think I saw ref recently to a CD ?. NSW State Records has indexes to assisted arrivals 1844- 1896 on line and in books format in many libraries bye Marg Morters Member of Central Coast Family History Society GOSFORD NSW Australia

    2. Kitson, Dianne
    3. Hi I am a newcomer to this list and am not very knowledgeable about shipping lists, so please bear with me. My grandfather Walter Swanton JACOB was born in Somerset, England and emigrated to South Australia. I have found an entry in the Adelaide Mortlock Library showing that he arrived in Adelaide in 1901 on the ship Omrah and his embarkation port was Fremantle. Is there sks who has access to and could please check the shipping records relating to Western Australia for an entry relating to Walter Jacob or Mr W S Jacob arriving in WA around that time? Any help would be appreciated. Regards Dianne Kitson Sydney

    3. Hi, Trying to find how/when the family Kennedy arrived in Australia. The particular ones are HUGH KENNEDY his wife ELIZABETH MCLEAN, their son was in his 20s when he married in 1854 at Collingwood. Maybe JAMES came out by himself ? He could not make up his mind if he was from Glasgow or Londonderry as some documents say different birth places. I am hoping somebody may know of them. HELP. Anne

    3. Hi Janelle, Here are some deaths, I think the first one might be the correct one as he died in 1875, age 37, so this make date of birth 1837/1838. Macquarie Plains I would was in Tasmania not NSW, but maybe this was his birth place not his death place, because registered state is NSW. Do you have his death cert ? Often this doc will give answer to the 'how long resident' question. Presumably you have checked assisted arrivals records of various States ?? ( BTW normal typing is much easier to read than all lower case from a computer screen . Best to use caps were you would normally and type surnames in all caps as this makes them stands out and helps with names like William WILLLIAMS, David DAVID etc ) Bye Marg Morters Member of Central Coast Family History Society GOSFORD NSW Australia
