Hello, I am in need of advise on where to search for a UK Merchant Navy ship arrival to Williamstown in 1926. I have been to the PRO and searched the passenger lists for this year with no luck. The name I am looking for is Alexander Russell McDonald. I believe he worked for his passage to Australia. Could anyone tell me if there is an index or listing of Merchant Ships? Which newspaper should I be checking and how would I narrow my search for these records? The ship name of Mermaid has been mentioned in the family as a possibility, although I can find no record. Regards, Jo Finch

Hi Listers I am seeking the name of the ship which brought my GGGrandfather CORNELIUS O'HARE from Britain to Australia in 1854. I have searched and had others search the following index's without finding him. Index to Assisted Imm.in Vict. from 1837 Index to Unassisted Imm. into Victoria Index to Assisted Immigrants arriving Sydney & Newcastle Index to Assisted Imm. to South Australia Also hundreds of hours searching the Internet !! He worked in the goldfields and lived in Castlemaine, where he married and his first child was born in 1960 &1862 . I know he left Vic. for NZ in 1864. Any ideas where I could start to find records of men working the goldfields in this area? He married Margaret Kerr, whose family had had their own Mining Co. in South Africa at an earlier date. A fellow researcher found a Chas. O'Hare/ O'Hara on board the" Invincible " which arrived Victoria August 1854. I have not been able to locate a passenger list for this. If anyone has access to this list would you mind sharing it with me please. I have read that sometimes emigrants used another name to gain entry. Cornelius was born in 1839 so would only have been 15 in 1854. Only other clue I have is that his older brother Daniel just may have emigrated to Australia as well. Any and all ideas would be very welcome. Regards Midge New Zealand

Does his death cert give answer to the 'How long resident in Australia, and which State" If he first lived in Victoria you would need to check the shipping pages of the Melbourne newspaper ....... Probably the Argus for around the date. Or if he lived in NSW the Sydney Morning Herald Films of these papers wuld be in many larger libraries WAGS have recently published arrivals to Freemantle from abt 1895 to 1920s on CD Could be worth checking that. NSW State Records , Globe Street , off Lower George St, The Rocks. But I dont like your chances of finding this pair. Hi, I've joined the list in the hope of clearing up an old family mystery, that's also part of my current family research. My great grandfather Edward KITCHEN (or KITCHIN) is said to have emmigrated to Sydney with his daughter (my grandmother) in about 1920. I have all the information on his daughter - marriage and death certificates. However, we cannot find one single reference to Edward. No death certificate at all. We've checked with cousins back in Birkenhead and they're sure he left with the daughter (she was about 19 at that time). He was born in Tranmere, Birkenhead (across the Mersey from Liverpool) in 1858. It's very unlikey that he lived beyond 1945, where the NSW "Between the Wars" index ends. I've searched these trying all sorts of spelling variations many times. Surely my father (b1932) would have known something about him if he was around beyond 1945. He has no recollection of him. Edward Kitchen seems to have vanished without a trace! One theory we've considered is that he died en-route. I'm wondering whether anyone can advise where the death registration would be if this is the case. The other thing that I'd like to check is arrival lists for 1920. I have no idea of the name of the vessel unfortunately. Is there an archives centre in Sydney that holds these sorts of records? Arrival records, passenger lists. Many thanks, glen lambert Sydney, Aus.
Hi all, I joined this list in the hope that someone maybe able to help me. My grandfather arrived in Aust on the 27 June 1910 on board a ship called .. Sucuic, Sucioe or something like that. That is what I am searching for. I can not find any references anywhere to this ship. I am not even sure where he arrived. I would like to know the right name of the ship if anyone can help. his name is Edward Edwards, not much to go on I know, but if somebody would be able to guide me to where I may find some information I would be most grateful. regards Trish Perth
Hi All Wonder if anyone can tell me where I might find some info on the ship, the Wilson which arrived in Australia in January 1842. My gggrandmother Jane McCartney(also named as McCarthy some records) came via this ship. Can't seem to find anything on it though. A passenger list would bbe great. Thanks for any help, Noelene Jones Townsville (which is very wet at present, and great as we desperately needed it)
Bob, The "Tamar" was a Barque of 372t. The date you mention is not quite correc, but very close. The ship was in port on that day. To find out more, and probably find your passenger, vist http://www.nla.gov.au/ferg/ where you will find arrivals, details of cargo and passengers. If they weren't travelling steerage then you should find their names. Ron Harper ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robert E.
