Hi Listers, Can anyone tell me how to go about finding the name of a ship that my ancestors came to Australia from UK. Port of departure was probably Portsmouth. Port of arrival, Sydney. Thanks in advance, Hilda in Newcastle NSW.

Hi Noelene, My grandfather came to Australia in 1910 from England on the Orvieto. I have yet to find the passenger list for that ship. There are several websites with ships and passenger lists available. Type 'Passenger Lists' into your search engine (I used Google) and you will get a number of hits - take it from there. My grandfather came to Australia from Lancashire at the age of about 20 so the story goes, on his own. Now seeing I don't know what ship he came on where do I start. It would be around 1911-1912 if that is true. His death certificate says he was in the country for 65 years but that could have been a guess by my grandmother and he died 1976. Hope someone can give me a few clues as to where to start. I just discovered recently that a friend of mine's ancestors came to Australia from Cornwall on the very same voyage as my forebears in 1851. Are there any other "John Knox" families out there?? Gary Matthews Gippsland, Victoria, Australia

Lorna, I am sure that East Indiaman simply means a ship plying its trade to the East Indies - almost certainly owned by or on charter to the East India Company. Do you GOOGLE? If not then I suggest you try it. What a great search engine. Go to www.google.com . If you search "Minerva East Indiaman" you will find lots of facts and details. Try this one for starters: http://whatson.northnet.net.au/users/blackheath/thebc41.htm Ron ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lorna Prendergast" <lprendergast@ozemail.com.au> To: <AUS-IMMIGRATION-SHIPS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, March 06, 2002 4:39 PM Subject: [AUS-IMM-SHIPS] Minerva Transport (East Indiaman) > Please does anyone know what is meant by "East Indiaman"....as in Minerva > Transport (East Indiaman).....and does anyone know where I'll find an > illustration of same?.....this Minerva was 558 tons and built in Bombay > c1796......brought Irish convicts to Australia in 1800....Thanks ...Lorna > ---------- > > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 >
