    1. [AUS-IMM-SHIPS] WALKEY; 1857-1872; England > NSW, Australia > UT, USA
    2. Laury Walkey
    3. I am searching for my great-grandfather Henry William WALKEY who emigrated from England to Australia and later from Australia to Utah, USA in 1872. He was in NSW before 1863 and married Mary MOSS in Saltwater Creek, NSW in September, 1863. They resided in that area until 1872, after the birth of their fourth child, and emigrated to join the Mormon movement in Utah. It's been suggested that he may have arrived aboard the ship the _Ascutna_ in 1853. I did a search of the unassisted shipping index at < http://www.vic.gov.au/ > and find a Mr. Jno WALKEY aboard the _Ascutna_ in Feb 1853. The researcher who suggested this says that the name is Mr. JNO WALKEY and that JNO means 'Junior Naval Officer'. In my experience, JNO or Jno is short for the name 'John' and if that is correct, then this is clearly not the Henry WALKEY I am seeking. Family tradition has it that Henry was a sailor from England but I don't know if he was ever in official naval service or if he just worked around ships. My questions are: does JNO stand for Junior Naval Officer or similar rank in the navy; how would a 'sailor' enter Australia; and would he be listed in the Unassisted Shipping Index as an unassisted *passenger* or would he be listed amongst the *crew* of a particular ship? Any hints on how to find the ship on which my ancestor arrived in Australia or the ship he and his family departed from to go to the US are greatly appreciated. Please contact me at polgara@telus.net . Cheers, -- Laury Walkey polgara@telus.net

    1. [AUS-IMM-SHIPS] Ship 'Gilmore'
    2. Alison Briggs
    3. I wonder if anyone has information on the voyage undertaken by the convict ship 'Gilmore'. It departed from London on 27.11.1831 and arrived in Hobart on 22.3.1832. I am particularly interested in the route the ship took and any ports it visited on the way. I have the information from Batestons 'Convict ships' but would like to know more about conditions aboard. 1. [AUS-IMM-SHIPS] HARRIS
    2. Russell Harris
    3. Hello to all, I am still beating my head against the shipping brick wall, trying to find the ship that Thomas George Harris came to Australia on. I know that Thomas was here in Victoria before the birth of his daughter Mary Jane Harris in 1850 (November) One would assume he arrived prior to February 1850 But did he come in via Port Philip, Belfas,t Sydney, Adelaide or somewhere else????????????? Thomas was married before, but had no issue, not sure that he came to Australia with his first wife of if she was left behind in England. Is there anyone out there that could assist?????????? 1. [AUS-IMM-SHIPS] Trying to determine port of origin for shipping c1920
    2. glen
    3. Hi all, I'm trying to track the ship that my grandmother came from Britain to Sydney on. I know from her death certificate that it would have been in 1920 or 21. I know she came from Liverpool UK. I've been looking at the great site "Convictions", which has the listings of ships for that period. What seems to be missing in most cases is the port of origin. Does anyone have any suggestions for finding a listing of ships doing the run from Britain to Australia in that period? From there I can try looking at some some passenger listings at National Archives. thanks, glen lambert Sydney, Aus.

    1. [AUS-IMM-SHIPS] Immigration To Queensland 1887-1889
    2. Geoff Wham
    3. Hi Listers, I have been searching for a few Years now, trying to find My 2xGrt Grandfather , ( Walter John WHAM ) and His 4 Children ( Caroline Maud, Florence Mary, Frederick Henry & Beatrice Grace ) Immigration Records into Queensland from Mid 1887 to 1889. I am being told through Family Members, they possibly paid their own way to the Rockhampton Area. I have been told that this could be a little harder to find if they did. They might of got off at Rocky or possibly Gladstone. I hope S.K.S. will be able to help. T.I.A. Regards, Geoff

    3. Hello Listers, This is my first posting to this List and I'm hoping someone is able to help with my query. My grandparents, Nellie and Clifford PRATT with their nine year old daughter Muriel (my mother) left Portsmouth UK on the S.S. Sophocles in January 1926 bound for Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The family were from Leeds. I've tried various internet shipping sites seeking information on this ship and maybe a passenger list, but haven't had any success - any suggestions would be welcomed please! 1. [AUS-IMM-SHIPS] KERR Family Immigration
    2. henderson
    3. Hi all I have ancestors named KERR who immigrated to Australia before 1857 from Co.Down, Northern Ireland. The family settled in Castlemaine, the parents Robert and Mary living there until their deaths. I have found records of the family there but cannot find the name of the ship that they came out on. Money was no problem so they would have been Unassisted passengers. Have checked NSW and PROV records but no matches there. Robert born in 1800 and Mary 1805, their children with them; James Frances John Jane David Samuel Margaret William Mary Emma Edmond. I would really appreciate it if SKS who has access to Index's relevant to the NSW or Victoria area, could do a lookup for me. I have a feeling that they were quite early settlers. Thanks heaps for reading this. Cheers Midge

    1. [AUS-IMM-SHIPS] ship "India"
    2. Gordon Barlow
    3. Here is an interesting website, containing extracts from the diary of an 1839 immigrant on board the "India". Gordon Barlow http://www.home.gil.com.au/~bbiggar/india4.htm During this earlier voyage of the India an Irish Immigrant, Robert Bell, travelling in the intermediate cabin kept a journal of the voyage. The journal consists of 71 handwritten pages describing the events of the voyage and details of life on board. A copy of the journal is held by the University of Melbourne Archives. (119 Barry Street, Carlton, Victoria, 3053 Australia. Phone 61 3 93446848 or fax 61 3 93478627) The University of Melbourne Archives has kindly granted permission to include a precis of the journal on this web site. The precis has by necessity included only general facts of the voyage and details of a few highlights and events experienced. The full journal is very well written and contains details of daily life on board the ship. 28th Dec --- Last night a woman of the name of Sutcliffe, steerage gave birth to a fine boy.
