    3. Hello listers I am someone may be able to advise me - a couple of years ago I discovered my grandfather and his brothers enlisted in Victoria in WW1 and both went to France and Gallipoli (1915) - until I found this information I always presumed my grandfather (Sidney) was with the British army. What I would like to know how can I find out when they came to Australia. At the time of enlistment they were farming in a town called Smeaton. Any advice would be appreciated. Regards Trudy

    1. [AUS-IMM-SHIPS] RE: PURCELL SISTERS.
    2. PEGGYMILLAR
    3. I realise that this is a big "ask" but I am hoping SKS is in a position to help me. I have 3 sisters, Mary b: 1870, Ellen 1871 and Honora 1874 PURCELL. These birth dates have been presumed from ages given on certificates and headstones so could be open to question. I thought I had found the arrival in Townsville Australia of Ellen and Honoria on the TARA in 1880 but now I have a rough estimate of their ages I realise that this could not be correct as they would have been too young to travel alone. They were born in Gurrane Tralee Co Kerry and parents were Timothy Purcell and Mary Anne Reardon. Is there anyone who could give me a lead on finding the arrival of these sisters? I presume they all travelled out together. Peggy Townsville Queensland Australia

I am looking for one Honora Shinners or Skinner born 1835, therefore aged 17, and there is a possibility she may have been on this ship. Hoping to find port of embarkation and any other information concerning her. It may have been another ship ofcourse, but so far I have been unable to find her. thanks chris.

    1. [AUS-IMM-SHIPS] MISSING PASSENGERS "EMERALD ISLE" 1841
    2. RON HARPER
    3. Dear fellow listers, I have a conundrum and wonder whether anyone can help. My GGGrandfather Daniel McGraw left County Durham in 1841 with wife Margaret (nee Pinkney) and four children - eldest 10 and youngest 5 months - aboard the "Emerald Isle" which arrived in Sydney on 23 December 1841. They were listed in Newcastle in 1843, Daniel as a "Preacher and miner". A search of Bounty Immigrants turned up the death at sea of the baby, Jane Anne but no sign of the rest of them. Having spent a few hours at the Archives I found an anomaly. The ships manifest has 15 passengers and 140 Assisted Migrants, yet the entries of the Bounty Immigrants lists only 85. The report to the Colonial Secretary lists a number of people disallowed Bounty, but still no McGraw, and well short of the 140. There were no steerage passengers as such. Question: Is it possible that some of the Bounty Immigrants travelled on to Newcastle on the ship and were processed there? They would have arrived in January 1842. If so, are there any records in Newcastle? Any little piece of advice will be appreciated, as I am about to give up. Ron

    1. [AUS-IMM-SHIPS] Alexander MILNE
    2. Desley & Keith
    3. Good afternoon listers, I have recently joined this list and wonder if anyone can suggest a method which will find the immigration details of an ancestor. Alexander MILNE died in Victoria in 1888 and his death cert. said he'd been in the colony for 44 years. If correct that would mean that he was 11 years old when he arrived in 1844. I believe that he came alone, definitely without his parents who died in England. Family gossip has him as a convict, but I've checked that possibility and it's not true. If he was a stowaway or ship's boy who left the ship in Victoria, would there be a record anywhere? He can't be positively identified until 1874 when he married. Prior to that date I can find no mention of him in any records. I would be very grateful for any suggestions, Best wishes, Desley

The SANDERSON family - John SANDERSON married Sarah DIXON (nee HEWITSON & widow of Joseph DIXON) in about 1892 and they had one son, George Ernest SANDERSON. Sarah also had three children to her first husband, Joseph DIXON - they were Sarah Ann DIXON, Joseph Alwyne DIXON (my grandfather) and Isabella DIXON. Joseph Alwyne Dixon was aged about 10 years at the time. The SANDERSON family came to Australia and lived in Brisbane in about 1894 or 1895. Unfortunately I do not know what ship they came on and I can only guess they arrived in Brisbane. Thanks for any help anyone can give me Regards, Judy H --- Incoming mail is certified Virus Free.
