    2. Donna Spencer
    3. Hello Listers Would anyone have access to the passenger list and information of the ship "John Elder" that came to Australia (perhaps Melbourne?) in 1882? My Great Grandfather, Samuel Millman, aged 23, was aboard this ship. Many thanks Donna Spencer

    1. [AUS-IMM-SHIPS] 'UTOPIA' passengers arriving in Rockhampton Nov. 11, 1862
    2. Sylvia Conaghan
    3. This notice is for those of you who may have had ancestry that arrived in Australia via the sailing ship 'Utopia' on November 6, 1862 in the area of Keppel Bay, Queensland, later arriving in Rockhampton on November 11, 1862 on board the Boomerang. Fifty years later, in 1912, a photo was taken of a small group gathered to celebrate their arrival in Queensland on the 'Utopia'. To see this photo, read a brief history of the ship, the 'lead-up' to the Utopia's arrival, and a summary of the "50 year Celebrations", please go to the following site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~auscqfha/Utopia.htm If you can identify an ancestor or have a photo of a former 'Utopian' passenger or know of a family story that involved this trip, please write me at my web site, which is saconaghan@bigpond.com Thank you for your time. 3. Hi, I have been monitoring this list for some time now and hopefully someone will be able to assist me in my quest. My grandfather - Stanley Ohlsen, came to Aus on his own as a 16yr old abt 1924. He was born in Bristol, 1908. We don't know the ships name but he did go to Gloucester NSW first before coming to Sydney. I searched the microfiche at the State Library (QLD) for the dreadnought boys but could not find him. Any ideas? Liz ecmaher@optusnet.com.au Brisbane

    3. We are searching for more information about Joseph Nicholas PHILLIPS who was born about 1835 (aged 23 at marriage in October 1858 in the District of Beechworth, Victoria, Australia and aged 69 at his death in Dec 1904). His marriage certificate (20 October 1858) it states that he was born in VENICE, Italy. However on his Australian Naturalisation papers (in 1902) it states that he was born in FIUME, Austria. And on his death record it is VENICE, Italy again. Joseph’s parents were Matthew PHILLIPS and Ursula PERICH(or K) – place of birth unknown though possibly England (Matthew) and Austria (Ursula). Joseph’s wife was 15 year old Ursula SYMES daughter of Thomas SYMES and Eliza NOBLE both probably from Ireland. Also on the Naturalisation papers he states "that on the latter end of June 1855 he arrived in the Colony of Victoria (Australia) by the ship "Blue Jacket" from the Port of Liverpool in April 1855". There are many records of this ship but the passenger lists do not contain Joseph PHILLIPS. Does anyone know of a way of finding names of the crew of a ship – another way he might have got from Liverpool to Australia! And also how to confirm where he was born? Marian marianj@tassie.net.au

    3. Hi Alan and Judith, Not sure whether or not there is a photo of either ship in "The Passage Makers" by Michael K Stammers, but it would be worth a look. For years I looked for a picture of another James Baines/Black Ball Line ship - the "Naval Reserve" - it was in this book, plus info on it. The book is basically a history of the Black Ball Line, it is interesting. If you wanted to buy a copy - it is out of print, but www.abebooks.com usually has a copy for sale - not cheap! However alot of libraries have copies in their reference sections. The book may be worth a look. Good luck Tricia > Dear List, > This is something of a last resort... > Has anybody ever come ascross an illustration/ picture of the > ship "MELMERBY" which ran on the Queensland funded emigration > runs for the James Baines / Black Ball Line 1865 onwards... > I have contacted many places including Queensland state sources, > New Brunswick, Canada where she was built, English maritime sources, > and several contacts with Black Ball line experience, the majority have > been extremely helpful. I tried the following link - it wasn't expensive- with some results but no image. I received a reply soon after my request with some ideas where I might try next. > I do have an image of a ship from the Black Ball Line if you are interested. There is no ship name on it though. Please email me off list if you want more information. > Kind regards > Judith Mellifont.
