Hi Gwen, On a visit to the National Archives the other day I saw of photo on the wall of a ship with immigrants on board - "women arriving in Australia to get married...looking out on the docks to see the potential husbands"? perhaps that was what was happening to all those girls on your ship? you might find a story in the newspaper for the day the ship arrived? check your newspaper archives at the Library? After researching many reasons on why young women were sent out to Australia I have come across three things 1) to populate the colony 3) that many young women were left in orphanages or poor houses as we know them and the "powers that Be" decided they were orphans and removed them from the over full buildings and forwarded them on to Australia/Tasmania But time has now proven that there were family members left in the old country and these children were sent without the knowledge of the parent/parents........who may have been out looking for work But another thing that arises through looking at these immigrants that the parents were supposed to stay at the poor houses with them and one wonders why? would it not have been easier to send the well parent to seek work Cara ----- Original Message ----- From: "Judy & Graham" <chezleschat@ozemail.com.au> To: <AUS-IMMIGRATION-SHIPS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 18, 2002 7:01 AM Subject: Re: [AUS-IMM-SHIPS] Castilian 1858 > Hi Gwen - there doesn't happen to be a John Reeves on that list?? a silly > question I guess but who knows? Hello Gwen, A book that I'm sure you shall find interesting is "Barefoot and Pregnant" - a book dealing with the ships that came out here - (a lot to N.S.W.) carrying only female passengers. They were shipped out here from the Workhouses in Ireland (willingly ! ) to help boost the population as there was such a shortage of females; this was a decision of the Australian Government at the time. There is also a monument to the Irish girls who came here in Hyde Park, Sydney. Hope you enjoy the book as much as I did. It is available from your local library. (You may have to go on a waiting list.) >>> gmgwen@hotmail.com 06/17/02 10:05pm >>> Hello listers I have partial passenger list (relevant to my family) of the Castilian that arrived in Botany Bay 1858, from England. Hi, the ship Ortona came to Qld Australia 3 times in 1907. Jan, Aug and Dec. Look at the Inwards passenger lists for Brisbane for those dates and you'll probably find your grandfather. Hello Gwen, Not sure about the Castillian, but here's a good book about "'A DECENT SET OF GIRLS" by Cheryl Morgan and Dr. Richard Reid which explains one view. Check out http://www.local.ie/content/54175.shtml/genealogy/emigration_studies/emigrat ion_stories or do a Google search on "A Decent Set of Girls". Hope this is of interest. Cheers, Rob. I do not have an answer - but I am looking for a single female, Mary Emma BAILEY, who travelled to Australia around about that time. She was born Chester, Cheshire, 28 May 1837, say 21 years of age in 1858. Maybe she is on your list?
