    3. My apologies to all listers for posting this on the shipping listserve, though I'm trying to 'crash' through a brickwall. <This is a really big stab in the dark (ouch!) but I'll give it a shot as I have been very lucky in most of my searches. I'm trying to locate any information about a MAUD MOON who somehow ended up looking after my illegitimate grandmother VERA (aka MARY) MANN after the death of Vera's grandmother Catherine MANN of who she was living with. These women where all living in the LISMORE area C1904. It seems that they moved between Lismore and Glebe, Paddington, Balmain. Catherine's defacto husband was John MANN. Does this ring a bell with any listers who may be able to help. Thank you. Alison Gregory>

    3. Hullo Meg The convict I am attempting to trace is my forebear, John Stevenson. There are no records of which I am aware of a John Stevenson ( of this exact spelling ) arriving on any ship in the first or second fleets, however there were two tried in 1790 and sent to PJ in 1791. I am advised that the John Stevenson who was sent on the Albemarle died and was buried at sea south of Perth. I would like to find some evidence. Therefore, if this is so, my John Stevenson must have travelled on another ship, possibly the Britannia, yet many of the early musters and the census of 1828 in PJ, record John Stevenson as arriving on the Albemarle. Is this just a clerical error or did John Stevenson try and hide his past or what? A person of this name arrived in the Greenhills area (Richmond) and lived, worked and produced a family and this is certainly my forebear. It is the link back to England that I am attempting to trace. 3. Hi Allan, Probably Mortlock Library may have more information on this. Or an article in the newspaper of the time the "Register". http://www.catalog.slsa.sa.gov.au:1084/screens/opacmenu.html The following is from Di Cummings site, but does not have a list of passengers http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/%7Edicummings/SAShips1851-1855.htm 1851 CONDOR from Liverpool 23 - 01 1851 - Captain Daly, arrived Port Adelaide on 11-05-1851 From Migrant ships for South Australia CONDOR 849/912t, Wood. 3 mast ship. 1. Visit by ship Condor to Adelaide in 1851
    2. Allan
    3. In 1851, the cargo ship Condor (but also carrying some passengers) was berthed at Adelaide for about seven weeks - from May 11, 1851 until approximately June 30. One family (Mr & Mrs Newton and three children) was destined for Melbourne, but apparently stayed on board - or on land at Adelaide - during this prolonged stop. Can anyone tell me where I might uncover any information on the Condor's stay and/or of that family. Allan Jamieson Burnie Tasmania

    3. Good morning Listers, Major William Harvie CHRISTIE, with his new wife Ellen returned to the Colony of New South Wales, sometime before 9th November 1837, when the birth of their first child, a son, William Blayney Beaver CHRISTIE took place at Liverpool, in New South Wales. William Harvie Christie joined the 80th Foot as an Ensign Lt. in 1827 at Sandhurst, then became a Captain in 1833 and was sent to the Penal Colony at Port Jackson in 1833, with his regiment. He was appointed assistant engineer and superintendent of the Iron Chain Gangs (convicts) at Liverpool. He returned to England in time to marry Ellen Harrison in Manchester on 28th July, 1835. However, I am not sure if the 80th regiment returned to England, or just CHRISTIE. While in England he received the commission of Major. However, William Harvie Christie, sold his commission and retired from the Army, due to ill health. He then returned to New South Wales with his wife Ellen, and maybe his brother-in-law, James Harrison. The year of him sailing to the Colony would be between August 1835, when he married Ellen in Manchester and the birth of his son William Jnr in Liverpool in Sydney in November, 1837. How can I find what ship the family arrived in Sydney? Any suggestion would be very much appreciated. Regards, Janice Sydney.

    3. Hi Leanne, It is "Sea Slugs" Some estimates are that the population of the approximately 83 major islands in this group, totalling about 4,700 square miles, was as many as a million people before the Europeans came in earnest in the early 1800's in search of four things: sandalwood (a rare sweet smelling wood popular with the Chinese as incense), beche-la-mer (or sea slugs, a very tasty and expensive delicacy, also traded with the Chinese), cheap labour (or blackbirding, where natives were rounded up for use on plantations), and conversion to Christianity. The net result, because of diseases against which the indigenous people had no defence, was the population collapsed to a low of about 40,000 by the 1930's. It's now about 175,000. Each of the islands had, and still has, a distinct culture. From Paul Benyons site the following, The Elizabeth has returned from her sandalwood cruise, with about 120 tons on board. The brig Sir John Bing left Anatam for China the beginning of February, with a full cargo of sandalwood. The brig Spy, from China, was at the Isle of Pines in search of sandal. wood and beche-la-mer ; she had been rather unsuccessful. 3. Hello again to the list.... CHARLTOTTE BUTLER/BUTTLER: I desperately need help.......I am trying to find when / how my ggg/mother entered Australia.... I have differing unproven reports of her arriving sometime between 1839 and 1841......some reports say she came on the SUSAN others say the .CORNWALL..some reports say she came in to Victoria, others say Sydney, NSW?.. I cant seem to find anything anywhere on the net to back up either of these reports... She is said to have been born in England c. 1832 which would make her still a child at the time...... Did she come as an immigrant...assisted or otherwise?...with / withouth family? Did she arrive as a child convict?...I know they transported teenagers without adults, what about younger children? Charlotte HAD to arrive here somehow as we know she was born in England and married my ggg/father, Thomas Norley, in NSW in 1848. Can somone please help me solve this puzzle. thanking you, Karan, Oklahoma.USA
