    1. more on Immigrants by the Herald
    2. Kevin and Sandra Wilson
    3. IMMIGRANTS BY THE HERALD The immigrants by the Herald are still on board waiting engagements. From information we have received the poor people have been greatly deceived by the immigration agents at home. Some engagements had been made, but, we have reason to believe, not to the extent represented by one or two of the Sydney papers. The small sum of 70,000 pounds will be required to pay the bounties of these deluded people, and where the money is to come from is a mystery, the solution of which seems to have engaged the attention of the "Metropolitan Press" for the first time, notwithstanding they have been "moving heaven and earth" for months past, amid all the destitution prevalent in Sydney, and consequent on a want of employment for the labouring classes, to promote the very disideratum they have now so much reason to deplore. 1. Ship - Herald with Emigrants
    2. Kevin and Sandra Wilson
    3. ARRIVAL OF THE SHIP "HERALD" WITH EMIGRANTS This splendid vessel has brought three hundred and twenty bounty emigrants, under the superintendence of Dr Sullivan, consisting of 106 males, and 103 female adults, 47 male and 45 female children, above three years of age, together with 81 infants; the whole have arrived in healthy condition, three infants died on the passage, and four births took place. The cleanly state of the vessel and emigrants reflect great credit on the surgeon-superintendent, captain, and officers; in fact, the fittings up are superior to any emigrant vessel that ever arrived in the colony. The berths are in two tiers round the ship, and as there are about nine feet 'tween decks there is a free ventilation; each single man or woman had a separate berth, and the married people two; the young men were placed in the fore part of the ship, the married people amidships, and the single women aft, with bulk heads between to keep each party separate. The passage made by the Herald, ninety-one days, is the quickest that has been made for some years, and the passengers are about to present a memorial to the Captain and Surgeon, for the kindness evinced towards them throughout the voyage. The principal part of the male adults are agricultural laborers, but there are also some mechanics - blacksmiths, masons, carpenters, &c. 3. Dear Miss G - the Euripedes sailed for forty years! Not alwats under that name, howqever. The best source I know on both of your ships is Peter PLOWMAN Emigrant ships to luxury liners published by UNSW Press in 1992. It has tthe wholw history of the ships, plus photos. Any decent library sahouyld have this book. If your library does not, arrange an inter-library loan. Good luck! 1. Arrival 1871-1883 S.A.?
    2. Janice Doughty
    3. Good morning Listers, I am hoping SKS can assist me with the arrival of two Kerridge brothers, maybe both in Port Adelaide, or one in Port Adelaide, Joseph Kerridge and the other in Sydney, Walter Jowett Kerridge. Joseph Kerridge born circa 1841 in Stowmarket Suffolk and his younger brother Walter Jowett Kerridge born circa 1849 in Leeds, Yorkshire, arrived in Australia, when? In the 1871 Census, Walter Jowett Kerridge was still in England, as a boarder at Everton, Lancashire:- Walter J Kerridge, Lodger age 22, born Leeds, Yorkshire. However, his brother Joseph Kerridge cannot be found in the England in 1871. Joseph Kerridge 42 a single man is in Adelaide by 1883, as he married Isabel Varley 33 single, the daughter of James and Martha Varely (nee Crossland) at the home of George Bradley in North Adelaide, South Australia. On 8th February, 1883 Mr and Mrs. Kerridge arrived on the "Barrabool" in Sydney, they settled in Newtown an inner city suburb of Sydney, where three sons were born over the next seven years. Joseph's brother Walter arrived in the Colony, maybe with his brother or sometime later after Joseph and his wife Isabel had settled in Sydney, as Walter Jowett Kerridge, the son of James and Ellen Kerridge, died at Parramatta in 1899. I am unable to find a marriage for Walter. Any help with the arrival in Australia of these two brothers would be very much appreciated. Regards, Janice Belrose - Sydney
