    3. Hi I was wondering if anyone knows of a Clifford Hill Knight that travelled with Frank Ryan to Australia from London in 1927. That is the only information I have so I know it is not much to go on. I live in outback NSW and only have access to research over internet. I have spent a lot of time hunting but to no luck. 3. Katrina if he was drowned at sea, and no body was found, then it was unlikely that a death certificate would be issued in Australia, especially if this was an Australian registered ship. The newspapers usually recorded the deaths of the masters of regular trading ships in and out of Australian ports. If he was Sydney based, then they would be the best papers to start with. The papers usually also records shipwrecks, men overboard, unusual incidents etc. best wishes JennyFawcett ----- Original Message ----- From: "Katrina" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, July 03, 2005 2:18 PM Subject: [AUS-IMM-SHIPS] Finding ancestor "lost at sea" (NSW) 1852 > > Hello, > > I've found a reference to my ancestor Thomas Gibson, being lost at sea between Sydney > and Newcastle in Sept 1852. 3. Hi Katrina, Maybe one of the shipwrecks mentioned below is your "Harrieff/Harriett" http://oceans1.customer.netspace.net.au/nsw-wrecks.html Harriet. Wooden two-masted schooner, 43 tons. Built Manning River, 1840; Sydney, 69/1840. Lbd 47 x 15.9 x 8 ft. Captain Love. Cleared Sydney Heads for Newcastle April 1844 and disappeared in a gale. Last seen near Bird Island. [GB],[SAN] Harriete. Cutter. Ashore and lost while crossing the Richmond River bar, NSW, 11 May 1851. [LN] Harriett. Wooden cutter, 30 tons. Built NSW, 1843; reg. Sydney, 56/1846. Length 39 ft. Lost on the Richmond River bar, 1851. [SAN] The Shipping Gazette and Sydney General Trade List starts in March 1844, so is probably too late. http://www.nla.gov.au/ferg/issn/14403897.html Happy hunting, Maureen ----- Original Message ----- Hello, I've found a reference to my ancestor Thomas Gibson, being lost at sea between Sydney and Newcastle in Sept 1852. He was listed in various documents as a sea captain and master mariner. The vessel was described as his schooner "Harrieff" which could be "Harriett". I've searched Google with no luck, apart from the first reference, which is at a site by someone who is from an American branch and hasn't yet replied to my email. I can't find a death entry for Thomas and was wondering if there was anywhere else such death records may be found. Thomas married Jane Eastcott in Sydney, 1842. Jane remarried in 1854. I suppose newspapers of the day might be the only record of the vessel being lost. I'm guessing he was a local mariner but don't know that. I don't know where Thomas was born. 3. Hi I have two ancestors Cook William and Cook Charles. William Cook married Louisa Richardson 1856 Penwortham witnesses George Wood Thomas Browning William Cook married Maria Kemp in Kaniva Victoria about 1861 Charles Cook married Isabella Robertson 1861 Upper Wakefield witnesses John Cook and Maria Cook (I believe this Maria Cook is likely to be 2nd wife of William Cook) So who is this John Cook? William possibly? In a newspaper article re death of Charles Cook's son in 1933 it states "Late William James Cook who was the son of Charles and Isabella Cook. His mother migrated on the ship Shakamaxon in 1853 and his father followed later from England" I have the Shakamaxon list. From the SLSA records A Cook John and William arrived aboard Calphurnia April 1849. I have been unable to locate a Cook Charles arriving between 1852 to 1861. Any help greatly appreciated Cheers Kate

    3. Hi Maureen, Is this the information you obtained online? Unassisted Immigrants to Victoria from Foreign Ports Mr. HASSALL, 31yrs, May 1856, Spray of the Ocean, B(ritish Port) fiche 108, Page 004 If you look at fiche B108, page 004, it will be an image of the page from the ship's register that has your Mr. HASSALL on it. As he was unassisted, there is probably no more information on the image than what is indexed online. Looking at the ship's register would give you information about the ship - Captain's name, port of departure, other ports of call, number of voyage days, tonnage, etc. You could also see the names of the other passengers. You could also print the page to add to your family history file. If he had been an 'Assisted Immigrant' there would almost certainly be more to find out from the ship's register. Regards, Maureen ----- Original Message ----- Thankyou Maureen. Excuse my ignorance but does that mean there is more information on their lists than what is shown online from the Vic PRO? It depends how much info is recorded. You may not find his given name, although it looks as though there may be one, given the ---. 1. Finding ancestors on shipping registers
    2. Maureen
    3. A tip if you can't find your ancestor's entry - the registers may be held and indexed in another State. I found my grandfather's entry into Australia after giving up twenty years ago. My daughter and I had spent many hours at the NSW State Archives looking. We had been told that the family had arrived in Sydney on the 'Orient'. Eventually we were told at the archives that 'they had probably arrived in steerage' and that steerage passengers' names were not recorded and that our only hope was to look in the newspapers of the day. Recently and by accident, I found that the 'Orient' was included in the wonderful microfiche series of Shipping & Immigration into Victoria put out by the PRO of Victoria. The full registers of the Orient are there - all the passengers disembarking in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney. Happy hunting, Maureen
